A very workmanlike Elevation Tour performance from our boys on this particular night. I felt Bono's voice was a bit off and lacked any kind of penetration but he gave it everything he had on most tracks so I can't nitpick too much. The Fly was still a feature on this night, although Out Of Control would have really set the Scottish folk wild... There were some touching moments, particularly Bono's quite open discussion about his old man's very recent passing and this was emphasised when the band immediately went into a great rendition of Kite. You could sense a great atmosphere in the arena like it was a very intimate, cosy venue and the boys seemed to have felt quite comfortable in these surroundings with a very vocal Scottish audience (see below).
I couldn't fault too many tracks but I felt it was a fairly lacklustre start to the show. It seemed to pick up when the boys let rip with Discotheque (a tour highlight IMO) and Gone shortly thereafter, but fluency wasn't really a strong point here. Why play a sombre kind of tune like Kite right after a kick-ass number in Discotheque and then go into another fairly energetic song in Gone? The New York/I Will Follow/SBS combo was a good fit though and then you had arguable the best section of the show - the middle set which started from Stuck in a Moment (played really really well) through to Stay.
Other than, there's not a hell of a lot to add. It's certainly not a brilliant Elevation performance but you could do plenty worse. Three stars.
Sound
It's a genuine three-star recording. Nothing more, nothing less. It certainly doesn't deserve the two-star rating on the bootleg section. Perhaps the crowd are a litte too audible at times, there's sound fluctuations here and there, Beautiful Day has some distortion and Elevation cuts out suddenly at the end and then goes straight into Beautiful Day. Also, don't expect to pick up Adam at all, he's virtually non-existent. And Larry lacks a bit of penetration. But all in all, it's ok.
Recording: Audience microphone - 2 stars
Audience
Easily the best feature of this recording and one of the best I've heard. The Glaswegians again proved why they are one of the best U2 audiences in the world. On every single song they made their presence felt whether it be their sing-a-longs or just straight-out screaming and excitement. Bad and Streets were especially great. Flawless. Easy five stars.
Overall
Highlights
Stuck In A Moment--->In A Little While---->Stay - Superior performances of these songs. Perhaps it was the emotional state Bono was obviously in and they are pretty heartfelt songs but he really gave it his all.
Bad/40---->Streets - The best Streets segue IMO (pity it didn't have Psalm 116) and a tour highlight.
The Fly - I never tire of this version.
Notable mentions - Mysterious Ways and Shine Like Stars snippet (just because it's there).
Lowlights
Probably the lacklustre start and the closing set didn't really set me alight either.
Overall, only get this gig if you've tried all the other Elevation shows we rave about here. The New Yorks, Slanes, Southbends and others. It's 3.5 stars - the audience lifts this rating.
