I went into this bootleg expecting it to be amazing. And for many reasons, it was. But perhaps being at the show would have explained some of the...eh...lackluster performance goofs.
For example- the coolest moment in the whole show for me was Beautiful Day. The intro of the song, specifically. (This is probably the ONLY time I'll ever say BD was the ultimate highlight of a show, for the record)...Anyway, what MADE it so cool was that the intro chimes through, and instead of Bono coming in against Edge's chords, Edge just starts churning them out against Larry's tambourine. It's a really cool effect, similar to the first leg or two of 360's performances, where it's not such an immediate start to the song...it's a slowly building effect. Really neat. The only problem is...Edge makes it through the progression once...twice...three times...and Bono is nowhere to be found.
Could he have been doing something with the audience? Sure. I'm sure if you were AT the show, it would have made some sort of sense, why he just wasn't singing. It just didn't come in at a sensible time at all, listening to the show, and it got a little old...Edge would sort of stop and start again randomly since he didn't seem to be sure where Bono was really going.
A similar thing happens in Zoo Station...Bono just sort of goes his own way and the performance sort of suffers- but not as majorly.
Sound
Not quite a 4-star show, but also not really a 3. It's an average audience source recording that captures both the band's sound and the energy of the crowd nicely. Nothing that my ears couldn't get along with. Recording: Audience microphone - 3.5 stars
Audience
Fantastic crowd. Italian crowds are my favorites of the Europeans, if I'm being honest- the boom of the singalong is really incredible. Check out New Years Day...they sing along with the guitar part before Bono even comes in. They're enchanted, excited, and energetic throughout the entire evening. They deserve as much credit as the band does for making this show great.
Overall
This marks my 140th show listened to, and I'd say its in the upper half. Probably Definitely Top-10 Vertigo show...but I don't know about Top 5. I enjoyed it a lot, and I've marked several songs to go back to when I'm in the mood for some Vertigo Tour performances. Specifically...
-Vertigo
-The Electric Co
-Elevation
-New Years Day
-BD for the interesting intro
-All I Want is You
-One has a great "Hear Us Coming" at the end
-The Fly
The middle suffers the average-ness of pretty much every Vertigo show, but the beginning of the show (Vertigo even all the way through City) really rocks. This show is worth your time.
