1. It is possible to interpret this idea as the idea of the "Promised Land" where people would live in harmony and peace.
Furthermore there is the Constitution and the idea that everyone is equal for the law, stuff like that.
But of course, there are also other historic connotations to name America; America is not merely an idea - Bono, in his character in BTBS, may give the impression that he says that America is an idea and nothing but an idea, but he does not explicitly say so.
But I think it is good to think about it. Be critical. Do not trust rockstars...

I poured my heart out and can't get a "quote", this America and Bono hoarse shit is so outside of this our topic here that we have be post on with enjoyment to see our thinking allow to share with this u2 community
  3. That what's worries me: there is too much too say! And Europeans already talk so much (put 2 Europeans in a room and they will call it a meeting!)

But things like "There is no them, there is only us" and "We are one, but not the same" are very European ideas.
To be different and to be unified at the same time requires to accept each other differences on a very deep level...
Europe needs to relax and be cool...while at the same time it needs to work hard and toughen up - this is the challenge.
The good news is that this dialectical tension (that somehow needs to be resolved; to be "sublated") is both Greek and German - at least as an idea...
  4. Regarding Bad, some statistics taken from U2gigs

    Unforgettable Fire: 89/113: ~80%
    Joshua Tree: 108/109: ~99%
    ZooTV: 104/156: ~66%
    Popmart: 9/93: ~10%
    Elevation: 81/113: ~70%
    Vertigo: 28/131: ~20%
    360: 13/110: ~10%
    IE: 7/22: ~33%

It's interesting that Bad has only at best been on rotation since Joshua Tree. Another interesting note is that Bad fits very well with the themes of the tours in which it appeared on rotation. ZooTV brought global addiction to the media into the forefront and Elevation was arguably U2's most spiritual and religious tour to date. The ideas of addiction and spirituality are well embodied in Bad. I'm not going to say that it's a shame for U2 to play such a powerful song so sparingly, but when we talk about their other warhorses such as SBS, WOWY, and even Streets on rare occasions losing their steam and magic, I can almost understand why they've decided to keep Bad as a precious resource.

I'm an American and I've enjoyed Bullet The Blue Sky immensely in large part because it's a song about America and Bono uses it to violently probe the ideals Americans hold dear. When you've got a song with the lines "run into the arms of America" and another song titled "The Hands That Built America" it's hard to not talk about America.
  6. Is it?
This is GENERAL i+e Tour. And if Bono talks - or hints - at certain political dimensions
as part of the show, I think that we can do too. I even think we should do.
(But not too much, on that I agree! - nice and enthusiastic review btw )
  7. This is Bono we're talking about: part rockstar, part activist, part insufferable Jesus. The main thing I like about him as an individual is that he will not shy away from any opportunity to probe at your views and beliefs. Some people don't like preachy Bono, but I think you can't have U2 without having Bono the preacher, or Bono the political commentator, or Bono the human right's activist. I like that I can go to a rock show and leave thinking about how I look at the world around me.
  8. YEAHHHH! Double rainbow quote! So nice you hit it twice, I get that a lot. I can't wait to hear what Bono has to say, still in the I have no idea what he is saying till I search for the transcript then can follow the idea stage . But I'm sure there is a lot to comment on there. And for Bono, none of these GUYS, our GUYS would be who and/or what they are without each other
  9. bono is a beautiful people
