    3 taper composite 5.1 mix by }{eywood

    Front channels:

    Taper: Spyder9

    Rear channels:

    Taper: Izaak Micah
    Gear: MK4 > KCy I > VMS 05 > Sound Devices 722
    Location: DFC FOB, about 15' in front of board, in the hat XY
    Lineage: Soundforge 8.0.53 (normalize and some minor fixes of volume, Dither, Resample) > CDWav 1.94.5 > FLAC 1.7.1

    Center channel:

    Taper: Bobby Plant
    Lineage: AT803 > Sony MZ-RH10 > MD Master > CDR > EAC > Flac



    This is a 5.1 mix created October 19 & 20, 2015. All work done with Adobe Audition 1.5 multitrack. The above tapes were speed corrected and synchronized. Some EQ used on the individual tracks to make them fill each other in a bit better. The subwoofer channel was created by mixing the other 5 channels down to mono and cutting out everything above 100hz. The 6 mono wavs were then encoded to a 5.1 lossless wav file with the AA surround encoder. Reduced to flac with Xrecode II. The files are encoded at 16/44.1 because that's the resolution of the source tapes.

    I do not have a surround system, so I don't really have any way to check the balance on the channels. The volume is fairly even across all 6 channels, and the mix sounds pretty good in stereo. Adjust to your taste. The subwoofer channel in particular may be way too much, but that's why these systems have volume mixers.

    The Bobby Plant tape runs about a minute and a half shorter than the other two, so the center channel fades out before the coda on "40".

    This sounds pretty weird though to me, someone without a 5.1 system making a 5.1 matrix?

    Next time, please feel free to submit the recording directly to us: go to the show page, click Audio & click Add a new recording. This way you also get torrent credits for it
  3. This is a disaster of a mix. Remy--your first instinct is spot on. It's like a blind person making a multicam recording.

    It's amazing sometimes how some folks, in the process of 'remastering', honestly make it significantly worse. You're better off listening to the Schoeps MK4 recording of the show most likely. Avoid this "5.1" mix.
  4. Why would you make a 5.1 mix if you don't have the equipment to check if it sounds ok before releasing it?
  5. Clinical insanity? Maybe just doing it for the hell of it?
  6. I agree with 99% of the posts above, but that 1% I don't agree with is when people start getting personal about it. ^
  7. Clinical insanity is merely a fun theory The reality is that its likely a person that is in love with playing with stuff on the computer...but hasn't put right pieces together for quality result.
  8. I say that based off of multiple other mixes that the mixer has done with questionable results--hence the pattern.
  9. Why is everyone freaking out? If you don't like it delete it. And the world will resume spinning.
  10. Fly108--how many times have you made that exact same message? It's not freaking out, it's giving an opinion on a recording. On the internet. If that's not kosher, then I doubt any message board will survive
  11. This sounds rather strange indeed. I'd almost like to listen to it just for the heck of it... Oh, wait, I don't have a 5.1 setup either So I guess I'll just have to go work on making this 7.1, because that has to be even better, right? Maybe mix it on some nice laptop speakers, or the iPhone's speakers?
