1. Very interesting stuff there! Another point of view always helps, and coming from U2 friends it's double as interesting.

At Red Rocks With U2, Waiting For The Rain To Stop

“We actually were at Red Rocks when U2 did that kind of famous gig. The gig itself got called off because there was so much rain during the day that the gig was blown out. In the sleeve notes, I’ve got some pictures of us all backstage, of U2 on the day looking a bit tense. They’d flown, at their own expense, all The Tube camera crew from Newcastle to film the event. So the gig was off and it was chucking it down with rain and they put out an announcement on the radio to say the gig was off. What happened was that in the evening, so many people turned up who hadn’t got the message, that two or three thousand people were at the gig. On the video it looks like there are billions of people there, but actually they weren’t that many. There was a break in the rain and U2 went on to do one or two songs just to get a bit of footage on the video and they arranged a show the next night in Boulder, Colorado. During the first number, the sky changed, and Paul McGuiness was like “Keep Going” and sending out messages to keep the camera’s rolling. We were supposed to go on for the second number, to do Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall by Bob Dylan. But the U2 carried on and ended up playing a full set. It was really funny, there were some brilliant bits. If you’ve got the Under A Blood Red Sky album, first of all, there’s only one song from the gig on the album, the rest were recorded in Germany. When you see the video, it’s got Bono with a big flag, with all the red sky behind him. Well you don’t see that in the video because when he actually did that, it was in Electric Co and he did this whole thing with the flag. Because there wasn’t that many people there, he did the whole thing, but they cut it out of the video. He actually went off stage and under this tunnel and comes up in the middle of the gig at the mixing desk with his flag, and they’ve got all these lights coming off the mountains and all these helicopters appear beaming down on him. But there’s nobody around him, everybody’s down at the front waiting for him to come back. It looked good for the album cover, but it didn’t look good for the film, so that’s not in it.”

Wow Never heard the flag bit. Lovely. Thanks a lot for sharing discohype!
  2. It's weird how they talk about the Wichita show (the night after Boulder gig was scheduled to compensate Red Rocks attendees). They say there were something like 70 tickets sold so the gig was called off, but the "official" story we'd heard until now is that there was no way the band could make it on time from Boulder to Wichita so they had to cancel the gig
  3. I remember like it was yesterday watching The Alarm take the stage in Sunrise, FL (or Miami as it's always listed... truth is Miami is almost 50 miles away and Sunrise is actually a suburb of Ft. Lauderdale... a little Thursday trivia for ya!)

Anyway... I had never heard The Alarm prior to this but when they took the stage with mile high hair and cowboy boots I knew it was gonna be great. Since the venue was empty for the opening act I hopped a few rows to get front and center and after alienating a few folks by saying "hello Miami" (see above) it felt as I was the only there (obviously not true, but thats how it felt)
They wowed me and I'm a fan to this day... especially knowing the genius of Mike Peters and all he's been through...

Anyway, he didnt write much about this show, but U2 was magical too. A 3,000 seat venue that was also a dinner theater, the place sold people the "dinner" tickets which werent authorized for this show and Bono announced that anyone who had those tickets should go to box office for a refund! He also fell back into the crowd and they passed him all the way to the back of venue then all the way back up and stood him back up on stage. Wonderfully wondrous. Unfortunately this is one of the few shows I have never found audio or a full set list for.... but the memory lives in my mind like it was yesterday!

  4. A memory from that show... My friend snapped this shot.
  5. Under A Blood Red Flag! Great memories, sir. Such a shame that a recording doesn't exist
  6. A crying shame...

Interesting thing about this photo is we had no idea that Under A Blood Red Sky would even be coming out at this point. (this was about 2 or 3 weeks after Red Rocks) I always tease my friend that he could have submitted this for the cover.

    Hahaha poor guy

I just checked Pimm's book and the only reference about your concert and the day later is The Alarm supporting them, nothing else. No venue, attendance, setlist or anything else... So sad. Well, that's the early days' curse!

Double curse as it seems those are the only shows that have vague, if any, info!

But, at least I can definitely vouch that there were 2 in attendance. I just uploaded this photo to the show page here so at list there's some evidence of it's existence.
  9. Well done Just approved it.
  10. it seems that the band of the actor Johnny Depp, "The Kids", would had been support act for U2, two times...

1983 06 23 U2 plays at Sunrise Musical Center in Sunrise FL. This was one of two area shows that U2 played in which The Kids may have opened; the other was May 4, 1981 at The Agora in Hallandale.
  11. I trust The Alarm diary a bit more to be honest, but that's surprising anyway.
