Everybody plays dumb/fun songs all the time and they're great, but whenever U2 flirts with something a bit silly, we all get like "woah! you can't do that!"

The right to be ridiculous is something to hold dear!

hehe. been hearing that since the transition from War to TUF to TJT to AB...
Its an easy trap to fall into, although I do feel I'm quite open minded with u2's new stuff in general. Best thing was a bit of a surprise to the system at first but SOI is only getting better for me as time goes on. I think that's because they did the one key thing for me which is to write songs I can connect with and that a lot of people can relate to. There's a lot of emotional songs on SOI, different types of emotion but really from the heart, then there's messages in there I love, that line in California that Bono harps on about 'there's no end to grief, that's how I know there's no end to love', but it's worth harping on about, that's an amazing lyric in my eyes, something I can put people and events in my own life too. I guess that's what's saved the best thing for me in that I can put myself in Bono's shoes in terms of what the song means to him, it's still never going to be my favourite song but if the lyrics had been about something less personal i could never have grown to quite like it. Then there's musical genius like zoo station or the fly, but I should maybe save that for another day as I've rambled on a bit here.

That's what makes the world go 'round, my friend. Boy and October are personal to me because they are the soundtrack of my formative life. To others, they don't resonate... I hated California at first... it's growing on me. Perhaps those records that take the longest to grow on will have more of a profound meaning on us when they are fully realized... I dunno. It's all too heavy for me. I just wanna jump up and down and sing at the top of my lungs... and I don't care who is watching these days!

There's something to be said for writing a song that can be played at weddings and Best Thing certainly fits that. It's joyous and accessible. I can't imagine anyone of any age being at a wedding dance and saying "What is this?!"
  6. is the mix little different or am I just hearing things?
  7. Something does seem a little different, nothing massive but definitely something. Will be interesting to hear the full video.
  8. Finally listened to this enough that it's sunk in, this song is about Bono's bicycle.
