Now that is just stating a simple fact. It's not being negative. We have said here many times that we were not criticizing the shows for the people that attended. Now you can say "I don't care about the setlist as long as it's a good show", which is great, but people also wanted to know if the setlist changed in a given show. I can't say "Yeah man, they played Acrobat yesterday!".
Agree with you 100% when it is simply stating the facts but it's not always like that. Anyway I have seemed to have stirred the hornets nest which is ok. Some agree and some don't which is also ok. It would be interesting if we could compare positive feedback/comments in the threads against the negative/less positive. I know what would come out on top. No more comments from me though as I'm getting up early for a run and will listen to the new songs in a loop for about 2 hrs! ?

It’s just in our nature. For whatever reason we follow these shows every single night witnessing the same things over and over. That’s a fault of our own but when we do that then it’s the lack of variation in a setlist a or a particularly poor vocal performance that stands out.

It’s a lot of fun for the first week of a tour but once it settles into a rhythm then there’s not much to shout about (even though we are hearing Exit and RHMT ffs).

We exist in a bubble. A very niche bubble. I feel all of our bitching and whining is often relative to this bubble that we spend our time in.
  3. To get back on this song: certainly growing on me. I just found out its 4 minutes long but it certainly feels like it's a minute shorter..I really like the lyrics and the melody. Remind me of both BD and WITS.

It doesn’t really start until 30 seconds in and then has Kendrick at the end. I feel like it could be longer with the intro and outro!
  5. For now, this is how I rank SOE songs:
    1.Blackout
    2.American Soul
    3. The Best Thing/Get Out
    5.Little Things
GOOYOW is a grower but it's not something that I'd call awesome/impressive/incredible

Ah, I felt like it was really short as well!

And Window in the Skies... Now THERE'S a song
  7. Also, I definitely remember NLOTH being just as controversial around here as these new songs are. Not just around here, but the entire U2 fanbase elsewhere too. I remember a lot of people hated Boots, a lot of people hated other songs, thought the cover art was stupid (because the guy who's picture they used also had another picture that DIDN'T have a line on the horizon lol), thought Linear had a better running order and song choice, thought Bono's voice was awful, lyrics were awful, etc. And many others LOVED it

I think the band have been spoiling us pretty much since the release of Invisible, and I remember that being controversial as well. Songs of Innocence was pretty much widely celebrated at first, but over time you started seeing the two sides of the fence take shape.

Point is, I think the only reason people feel like they're seeing more negativity lately is because there's been so much to criticize over just the past few years, and I don't necessarily mean U2's been doing bad things, I just mean in the sense that we've gotten:

    Invisible
    Ordinary Love
    Songs of Innocence
    I&E Tour
    Live in Paris
    Kygo's Best Thing performance
    Red Hill Mining Town single
    JT Tour
    Little Things
    Best Thing
    Blackout
    etc. etc.

all in the span of just three years. Shit, the band weren't even that active in the mid-late 80s as far as a relentless release and tour schedule, or just having their fanbase hear new stuff.

And we all know that a band's back catalogue is their worst enemy. We've all grown to have emotional attachments to their previous work, and anything new that comes out has an uphill battle from the get-go to compare to that, and because U2's previous work is so great there's almost 0% chance of pleasing everyone. I've been saying this for the past little while, if U2 wants to please a bunch of their fans, they're going to piss off others, and that's just the way it's going to be. They haven't had a sweet spot in forever, maybe not since The Joshua Tree, but even then, I've seen fans on the internet say they hate everything after War. I've seen comments like "Unforgettable Fire is when Brian Eno perverted Edge's great guitar sound and U2 went to shit from there."

This is nothing new. It's just because we're getting SO MUCH (and we should be thankful for it as others have said) lately. Complaining about the complainers isn't doing anything either. Want a tip? Stop visiting the website, or at least the threads where you know you won't like what you're reading. I tend to stop reading setlist party threads just after a tour starts because it's always "ah they're just playing this again booooo" - which is understandable, but it's not really what I want to read - especially if I have a show coming up.

So to those who love the new stuff, good on you, and realize that while many of us might be more critical of what's coming out at the moment, there'll always be a part of us that envies you for being able to enjoy it at its fullest. Chances are in a couple years there'll be a bunch of us who've come around anyway. I know I'm already started to come around on this song already.

this is a great post. I've listened to they're more recent (21th century) records lately and I still really enjoy 80-95% of these records. I would even say the best parts of these records can compete with the best songs of JT/AB. The 'worst' parts of these records include songs that are, in my opinion, absolute forgettable (SUC, ABOY) tracks, but also some more 'average' songs (Crumbs, Crazy Tonight). So far, I think the material that we've gotten of SOE is not yet near their greatest work, but they're proper sounding tunes that will really hit home live. I still love that these guys are around and making music and really spoiling us with their last tours (I+E was incredible and so was JT) and records. They're not getting any younger, let's enjoy it while it lasts, or in U2's words: Smell the flowers while you can.

This song (GOOYOW) is just poppy attempt to get to the charts... that's my opinion
But I like the other new songs... just not this one...
No they weren't they were copying a lot from the Manchester scene Happy Monday's,Stone Roses etc ,didn't care for the charts?? It must have been the biggest marketing campaign in history trabants planted in major cities across the globe mega sized billboards in every major street ,The fly released for 3 weeks only in the UK to ensure it got to number 1 ,multiple videos for "One "each worse than the other ,5 singles released from the album do not tell me they didn't care for the charts and it was all about artistic integrity.

It's been bugging this guy too
