    In a recent post dedicated to Bullet The Blue Sky Solos Mac wrote the following and no one really picked up on it and I'd be curious to hear what other people think:

    I don't think we will see these songs dropped and if you think about it as a fan, WE SHOULDN'T WANT these songs dropped from setlists.

    Here is why: Bono, maybe before One (Tokyo 3 I'm thinking? Can someone help me out with this?) he stated that the above mentioned songs are the "great" and IMPORTANT ones.

    I think that we, as fans, forget that. Think about how the age spread each of us sees at the shows we go too. Parents bring theirs kids to these shows. Now think about the songs that WE loved that moved us.

    A young fan who buys the R&H DVD just might think that they missed the best of U2 and in one sense they might have but its important for the band to KEEP THE VIBE ALIVE and pass that torch on to the next fan. I didn't make it out for Joshua Tree or Lovetown but I was SO happy to hear Bono go with "NO MORE" in SBS for Vert tour.

    We need to keep these songs going because its important for the younger fans to experience them.

    It's not always about us and we should appreciate the songs that make the band the band we all know and love.

    PS. I started this post because I wanted to comment on it the original thread but that one got (ahem) a little out of hand.

  2. I am a young fan, I've never been to a U2 concert and I agree that theese three songs are boring today. I realize that they are classics and when I saw them performed on different bootlegs from the JT or Lovetown tour I realized that they are amazing. It struck me that theese three songs are songs that take a lot of power, intensity and passion to be good. A slow, uninspired Pride or SBS is quite pointless but the performance of SBS on Rattle and Hum is amongst my top 5 live video performances. To keep theese songs alive they have to be sung with great passion and intensity and i hope that U2 will make that for the next tour!

    Here's my POV, the songs are all great, but they have lost their intensity, and could you expect anything else after playing Pride nearly a thousand times. The songs are becoming actually derivative to the power they had, instead of adding to it. In other words, compare Pride on R&H and look at it today, same with BTBS, the energy is just gone. Full stop.

    But when U2 brought back Electric Co!!!!

    LOOK AT THE ENERGY THEY PLAYED IT WITH!!!!

    My point is, the old songs stated need a break, not to be dropped forever, because they've earned it, and they need it to become as great as they once were.

  4. I think a good solution to this would be to limit how often they play certain songs.

    Songs like Streets and Beautiful Day need to be kept, because they are live staples.

    They should play the others less commonly, maybe once every 3 shows, so then the fan reaction goes up and so too does the energy of the band.

    Yeah I just wanted to bring this out because I think this is interesting. Good point about Elec. Co. and I agree that some of the songs have lost their intensity. One of the first songs I noticed that with was NYD if you watch Zoo performances of it to Popmart and on to their recent ones - you're right, they have declined.

    The boys play rock and roll but have they backed themselves in the corner with these songs? Do you think the band is committed to playing these songs so the younger fans don't go home dissapointed? That might be a part of it.

    Personally I think its important for them (younger fans) to hear it however the band plays it simply because it (to me) gives the fans of that particular show a type of 'ownership' of the song in that they got to hear it directly from the band for once and not the tele or the stereo. Just a thought.

    Maybe they do need to rest them, or themselves.. to say they work hard is an understatement. The songs you mentioned, I can't think of what I'd replace them with. (Except for Bad - they need to play that way more )

    So what do other younger fans think? What songs would you rather hear?

    Well i'd like to hear a sort of homecoming take the place of pride, Dirty Day and Exit take the place of BTBS.
    Wire is an amazing song i would love to see again.
    Electric Co is just so dynamic and should be kept.
    And Bad needs to definately be played more, as well
    At the present moment i am too tired to write a whole setlist but i'll get on that.

    They have a wealth of songs they can take from some classiscs we haven't heard in years.

    Oh God me too!!!! LWTSH is one of my all time faves ( i call it the streets for 90's u2)
  9. I think maybe older stuff like Out of Control, I Will Follow (even though it was played a lot on the 5th leg of Vertigo), Electric Co, Stories For Boys etc.

    Keep Pride, SBS and BTBS, three of the most important U2 songs and still being played. I'd also like to hear some stuff from Zooropa and even the Unreleased and Rare stuff, maybe Leviate? Not holding out though.

    Maybe Gloria and even more of Bad, All I Want Is You.

    But i have to say i disagree with you on Vertigo NYD, i think it was as good as ever

    Levitate though i would love it, never gonna happen
    Stories For Boys etc. would be great
    A Pop and Zooropa comeback, because those were the last days when U2 had balls
  12. I would also love it if they played MLK more. Hearing it at the Superbowl was really nice, and playing that was a smart choice on their behalf.

    Refugee I'm not crazy about per se but that could arguably make a cool stage performance. Get everyone in an arena into that song and that might be some serious energy.

    Quick someone go call Brian Eno, it might need a remix. Or three.
