Oh, definitely. They'll never put out an album that pleases everyone.

That being said, have they ever? All you have to do is hop over to the "unpopular opinions" thread to see that even the albums some fans consider to be flawless have those who don't agree.

I think the main difference is, U2 have struggled (I'd argue since 2004) to please both fans, and that vague group of people they're trying to have BECOME fans. They're always torn halfway between making album that the hardcore fans will love, and an album that they think will garner them new fans. Most potent example of that is NLOTH.

A different example for you: I think most people here would argue that the weakest section of SoE is that middle section which contains all the hits - hits that are meant to get the band more attention rather than please their hardcore fans. My favourite song on the album is Little Things, least favourite probably being Best Thing or Get out of Your Own Way. I had my "casual U2 fan" friend check out the album. His favourite track? Get out of your own way, one of his least favourites because he simply thought it was boring? Little Things.

I think that's the crux of the issue more than anything else. U2's best work has always married those two things - big hits that please everyone, while still being interesting and of a quality that will please fans and keep them interested.

    1. Lights of home, St peters.
    2. You are the best thing about me
    3. Get out of your own way.
    4. Every breaking wave
    5. Book of your heart
    6. The little things that gave you away
    7. Landlady
    8. This is were you can reach me now
    9. Troubles, alternative version
    10. The Blackout

    SOE-SOI 8-3

That is actually a really good, if not great U2 record in my opinion.
  5. 1. Love Is All We Have left
    2. Lights of Home
    3. Red Flag Day
    4. Summer of Love ( I prefer R. Shulz remix but I think its don't fit for this set )

    6. The Little Things That Give You Away
    7. The Blackout
    8. Love Is Bigger Than Anything In Its Way
    9. The Troubles
    10. 13 ( There is a Light )

SOE is much better than SOI for me and that's why there are only two songs on my tracklist from the second album . Those SOI songs are my favourite on this album so it was hard to me find only eight from SOE, I love each track on it !
  6. Are you all receiving money for promoting SOE?

Okay I gave this a listen today and I gotta say it was really awesome. When I say that though, it's less about patting myself on the back and more about how great these songs are, and weirdly how well they fit together. The only change I'd make is maybe putting something in between California and Crystal Ballroom, but I'm not sure what. Maybe something slower, because going from the quick California into Crystal Ballroom makes the start of that song feel sluggish, which it shouldn't, it should feel groovy.

EDIT: Ordinary Love! I think that would fit in there beautifully.

I definitely like songs like Raised by Wolves, Where You Can Reach Me, but as I started selecting songs I realized there's a theme that runs through certain songs from each album, which is examining the concept of "love" in different ways. California might not necessarily fit there as it's probably the happiest song of the bunch, but it does fit thematically IMO.(...)

Yeah I was going to tell you that: your compilation album is much more of a "love/family album", leaving aside all of the political songs (and there's a LOT of political songs in SOI and SOE). Since I love when U2 get political, I couldn't think of leaving songs like Raised By Wolves, Red Flag Day, Summer Of Love or The Troubles out.

EDIT. Maybe this would be an appropiate approach actually!

Songs Of Innocence And Experience: Love EP
01 - Love Is All We Have Left
    02 - Iris
03 - Book Of Your Heart
    04 - Every Breaking Wave
05 - Love Is Bigger Than Anything In Its Way
    Bonus - Landlady

Songs Of Innocence And Experience: Politics EP
01 - This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now
    02 - Red Flag Day
    03 - Raised By Wolves
    04 - Summer Of Love
    05 - The Troubles
Bonus - Sleep Like A Baby Tonight

(PS. It hurts me so much to leave Cedarwood Road out, but it really doesn't fit in any of the themes)

Very true, very true. Yeah I wanted to put Raised by Wolves on specifically, but it doesn't really fit - but you're right, it's a bit dishonest to make a U2 album without involving any of the political songs I have to say though, with the exception of Red Flag Day, I don't love the political tunes on SoE. Summer of Love is great, but ever since we found out they didn't actually write the music (I know, I know - it's a point of debate), it's never sat the same for me. I wish I had never found that out.

There also might be an argument for Love is Bigger being a bit political, and Blackout is too, so it's not COMPLETELY void of politics

Your EPs are awesome though, might have to spin those later. I really wish U2 would do EPs. With a lot of their more recent albums, there's a REALLY good EP within them. I always bring up the NLOTH one:

    Fez - Being Born
    Winter
    Moment of Surrender
    White as Snow
    Cedars of Lebanon

But yeah, I can't recommend that sequence of:

    Crystal Ballroom
    Iris
    Book of Your Heart
    Landlady

enough. The themes in Crystal Ballroom, and the lyric "ghosts of love" going into Iris is eerie, then into Book of Your Heart maintains that love theme but brings it to a romantic context instead, right into Landlady where the sort of dark set of songs comes back to just being like "I love my wife though ".
