1. Just readed the article from atu2.com. Of course U2 is irreplacable, but there will be a time hen they stop
I was just curious about your opnion about this. Which band is able to reach the status U2 has right now, or will get near that.
I don't really know this. I think Keane can get far. These guys produced 2 good albums and they're getting better in my opinion. Of course RHCP are also really big and popular at the moment, their popularity is still growing.
Coldplay is great, but their last album was worse than their first two. They're also a band who can get really far. Green Day made some really fine songs, but are a little bit overhyped in my opinion. And there are of course many other bands with talent. Still don't think anyone can get the popularity and status, U2 has right now.

What do you think about this?
  2. Tough question indeed! I can't think of anyone at the moment who can acheive the success of u2. Yes there's lots of good and popular bands around like RHCP, Foo fighters and so on but u2 are so unique in their sound and style that I cannot see anyone at the moment outdoing them.

Keane are ok but can get annoying after a while. I don't think they are overall Britain's best band, the Kaiser chiefs are much more popular. Are Keane popular where u lot are from then?
Coldplay are over rated in my opionion too many depressing songs......I know there are many coldplay fans, just my opinion

If you had asked this question quite a few years ago I would have said Radiohead but thats before they churned out their electronic sh*t. Their first three albums are really quite something.

  3. Also bands nowadays tend to have a short life, not many bands will be able to go on for 20 odd years
  4. No one!!!
  5. Indeed Martin, NO ONE! U2 is unique, they are the first and last one of their kind..
  6. My guess is Bloc Party, in my opinion the best band from UK certainly they will become big but not as big as U2 is now.
Coldplay? Who knows, let's see what else they are able to do on the 4th Album but Keane are too boring. RHCP and Green day are not enough "mainstream".
Lets say U2 will stay on top for the next 10-15 years and after that we will look after the next U2.
  7. yes indeed NOOOO ONE !!!!!!!!
You don't also say who are the new Beatles or the stones !!!!
there is only one u2 and that will always be so !!!!!
Look Cold play once said that they are gonna kick u2 of
    with there album X&Y .
But if you asked people can you give me a name of a song of Coldplay
it only maibe fans who give you an answer !
but if you asked the same question about u2 there will be allot more people around the world
(even if they are not a fan !) who whil say: " ooh yeah sunday bloody sunday or pride
or elevation and so on !!!!!
If i would say who are the new beatles i would say perhaps OASIS....but they are not !!!
But who are the new stones ?????? i don't know
  8. i dnt think any other band will achieve U2 like success but i think The Killers can go places
  9. I think The Editors will be a force to reckon with eventually. Great first album, looking forward to the second due in June
  10. U2 is a unique band with a unique style of songs...I think they're irreplaceable....nobody makes songs and lyrics like U2
Cold Play will be a great and big band....but not a new U2

    see you friends!!
  11. When U2 was inducted into the hall of fame, Bono said if they came out today they would not have made it.

A few things are very different since U2 came out:
-Radio and MTV, once mass-media-channels for new artists, are now effectively dead. They have mostly been replaced by niche genres and specific methods of attaining music within that genre.
-If someone asks me what music I like, I will give them names of artists because in my mind, the artist transcends the "genre." How can you classify U2? Bruce Springsteen? Oasis? Pearl Jam? RHCP? I'm not saying you can't label them, but my point is if I hear them on the radio I instantly recognize "this is U2" not "this is post-punk-new-wave."
-Today it's more normal to be specifically "an indie fan," "a metalcore fan," "an emo fan," each of which have their own different sources of music (certain websites like www.pitchforkmedia.com or whatever).

-The major record system, the one where the rare mainstream artists make it, is set up so that you can have a hit single (or a few singles that all ride on the success of one), 3 - 5 albums that ride on the success of one (single song), then it's time for Greatest Hits and your time is up. Most of your albums are filler, because 1) you are selected for how well you churn our the formula single and thus you are not very creative, AND because 2) you have very little time to release your album.

-Most people do not listen to full albums anymore. They cherry-pick from iTunes IF they even pay for music at all.

If you want to transcend the system and be known on your own, you basically have to take another route. Grassroots really worked for Dave Matthews Band. Coldplay seemed to succeed the old-fashioned way, and I think they'll be around a while, but I see them as the exception rather than the rule.

Don't forget October, my friend! If you ask me I'll say that it's not a complete fall the fact that Coldplay made an album worse than the previous two. It can happen, but they have to made at least TWO bad albums before we can declair them failed. And this is for every group.

Keane are good. They have to grow up more, but they have the qualities to make something good.

I think RHCP have alredy touched their maximum. Can't get better. Green Day, instead, maybe can get better, but I wouldn't bet anything on them. I don't believe in them.

For The Killers the same as for Keane. They can make something good but they have to grow up...

Finally I end my post with the post of AidanFormigoni, 'cause I totally agree with his opinion about this.
