when i want to put it onto a DVD do i copy all the files from the torrent on to it???

You have to create a folder on the new DVD named "VIDEO_TS", then you copy all the VOB, IFO files etc. in that folder and you burn it. Then any DVD player can read it and know that it's a DVD. Burning programs like Nero allready have a Video DVD option built in that automatically creates the VIDEO_TS folder.
