1. I've put this separately in an older forum topic but wondered if anyone could answer the following:-

(Question is addressed to U2met86 as he put me on to Firefox in the first place, but any answers welcome!)

    U2met86

Been using Firefox for a while now and love it but I have a couple of random questions I wondered if you had answers to?

In Safari, if you want to download a link to an mp3, you can simply Ctrl-Click and an option to download file will come up. This doesn't seem to work in Firefox. Is there another way?

Also, if I wanted to download a video in YouTube, I can Alt-Apple-A and a window comes up (called Analysis I think) that allows you to click on the file and it just downloads it. Very useful, and again, doesn't seem to be present in Firefox. I know about KeepVid but that is long-winded compared to above and wondered if there was an alternative? (Or is it just Apple's brilliance?!)

If anyone else has thoughts too they would be much appreciated!

  3. hey,

sorry i was late to the party here!

okay, downloading youtube and other videos can be done with the "VideoDownloader" extension, found here:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2390

youtube videos are .flv files. you can play them with VLC media player:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/14738

unfortunately, my experience downloading youtube vids is lousy. the program works fine, but the videos are such bad quality that i'd prefer to find another source (if it's U2 then i try to acquire a lossless DVD or at least an .avi file; if it's a movie or SNL comedy sketch i try to find a DVD compilation). they are pretty terrible; i think they look worse than when they stream from youtube.

as for downloading mp3s, usually i've never had a problem. i do as you said, ctrl-click / right-click on the link that leads you to the mp3 file, and one of the options in the drop-down menu should be "save link as."

i tried that on the following page just now and it worked fine:
    http://www.u2.is/sound.htm

great show by the way, i think it's the "zoo radio" from zootv houston. i think U2Start has it as well.

if the problem persists let me know and i'll do my best to help out. if i can't help, perhaps a bug report is in order to mozilla. they're usually very good about that. once in a while i find a web site that just plain won't work with firefox, so safari usually does the trick there.

by the way, i accidentally deleted my copy of safari (i was probably so thrilled with firefox initially that i trashed it like an idiot!); do you know how to recover it? i tried downloading it but apple won't let you; you can only download updates. maybe i need to find my installer discs or cop it off of another mac user... bunch of bollocks IMO.

No probs, topics move so fast on here I just thought I'd put it top of the queue again!

Yeh, I tried this one after your previous post recommending it but it seemed buggy to me - I noticed this complaint from a few people. Kept packing in. It's no biggy, as you say the quality's not great and I only do it occasionally - I can just use Safari for that. Thanks anyway.

What a goof-ball - just tried this and it worked fine - never thought to try the "save as' option!

I agree it's completely crappy they won't let you download individual programs. I'm more than happy to try passing over the Safari application if you know a decent way of doing it (would e-mail work?? - too big a file?) Let me know if I can be any help with this, least I can do

I was just looking at Apple (UK site) and noticed something about Safari. I've checked the US site and it's there too:-

It may be what you're looking for?

  8. Thanks for the info!

It turns out, Apple only lets users download updates, and you need Safari.app in your Application folder to get the license. I actually just realized I could just send myself the file from my parent's MacBook.

    Thanks again!
  9. Quick bump.....

Did they resolve the security issues with the latest version of Firefox?

What's the best browser out there right now?

    Cheers!

  10. Most security issues are nailed in the guts with Firefox 3. There's still some (as there are issues; security, usability etc) in every software program on every operating system, but the really major ones have all been taken care of. Current version looks to be 3.0.3 from the About page.

    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.0.3) Gecko/2008092417 Firefox/3.0.3

What's the best browser out there right now?

    Cheers!

Google Chrome is the standard now. It's way better than Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer, Safari and the others in so many ways for speed, interface, basic options and perfect rendering of 99% of decent sites including this one. For a first release, it's not half-bad at all, but if you're used to toolbars, menus etc get ready to forget about them for a little while, and looks great in Vista.

No Mac or Linux versions at this point, so you'll have to stick with Firefox or emulation if you want it.

The task manager is something to behold; it's great for nerds like myself. And unlike Internet Explorer 7 / 8, everything is in a logical place. Just a pity it has no add-ons, extra themes or whatever; they'll come in time.
