2nd gen means that it's a copy of a copy of the master. VHS cassettes lose quality when they get copied and they wear out.
If you spend 2 seconds on achtungbootlegs, or any detailed trader's site you'll see what generation a video is sourced from. That might help you to avoid future disappointments.
A lot of the videos are pretty old and that no postproduction was done.
You can't expect that these older videos have the same quality as the recent broadcasts/official DVDs.

Also keep in mind that you'll only get rips here or on spiral's blog. They're compressed and inferior to the actual DVDs.
