Oh how I wish my parents had done that. It would make me feel better about being an atheist. Good for you for telling your kids that
  2. One of the things my wife thought of. Cool, huh?
I was brought up to believe in God and the church and the pope.
So sometimes it still takes time to get rid of that idea...... doesn't matter, there's plenty of time ...oops...wrong smiley here.....

Tell your wife she's a very cool lady
I think my main beef with some religious people is that I have to make sure I respect their religious views, but since I'm atheist, they don't have to respect mine (This is only some people, not everyone is like that) and it can get incredibly frustrating.
  4. I don't have any affiliation. Feel no need to attack religious types though.

But just to be clear here: there's nothing wrong with believing in God -whatever that God's name may be- but I have a problem when people start using religion or "God" to force their opinions and values upon others (the citation above from Mr. Carlin comes into mind).

And I also think that the church and (holy????) bible have very little to do with God.
God is what a person makes of it, what his/her feelings are about the matter.
For instance, my wife was never baptised but she is probably the truest believer I've ever met.
And because she didn't grow up with indoctrination from any kind regarding this matter, her look upon things can be very refreshing.

I agree with you in my last post above I talked about how this new priest at my parish tried to force his own personal views on me. If anything it makes him look bad and me not bad you know. I don't get how people in faiths can be so not fully open-minded. The world would be a much more peaceful place if people opened up there minds more.

  6. Not to sound mean, but... no shit.

The attitude I am more likely to meet over here is that atheists insult religious people. "You believe in God? You're stupid." Young people get ridiculed by their peers for going to church. So, someone is an atheist. I fully respect the person's opinion but I really don't need to listen to such insults. The bad thing is that if an atheist says religious people are dumb, he's cool. I could roam about and yell that if you don't accept Jesus as your Saviour you'll burn in hell, but that wouldn't make some people feel comfortable, would it? So I don't do it. I really don't like when people voice their opinions in such manners. I'd like to ask atheist who enjoy insulting people for believing in God to shut up.

    Amen.
  9. I have my own religion....I believe in God, but He is not something I pray for or to....In my point of view, God is represented in all the beautiful things that happened or that I see in my life...it's something that give me forces and happiness, and it's someone that I like to talk to, so He is in my head and in my heart too, and I just have to thank He...most of people believe in God just to ask for things or because thay want things...my case is the oposite one hehe

I really think that all the religious manifestations or demonstrations are beautiful. I can feel a good energy coming from then, but all the religions have something that doesn't fit inside of me, so that's the reason of my point of view...it's something like: if I'm happy and I do good things for people beacause I like to do it, God will gave me good images and moments.

That's a lot like how I "practice." God isn't a big guy with a beard in the sky, he is the beauty and the good that is in the world. He is our hearts, our friends, all that good crap.
  11. I think the problem lies in how a religion defines god.
