When he says "then, after 5 years playing football, I was given an official University title" is like... OMG

The film puts forward the idea that simply doing what you're told will somehow make everything alright, no matter how stupid one might be - authority is always right and absolutely knows best. That's fascism, isn't it? "Why did you fix that gun so fast, Gump?" "Because you told me to, drilll sergeant!" "That may be the best single answer I've ever heard!" Or it goes something like that... And that's the tone of the whole film. Jenny gets AIDS (it's certainly the HUGE implication) because she acted like a 'slut' and opposed/rejected authority. Seriously, look at the film again - it's saying she got what she deserved. Just a couple of reasons why the film is cack...

Never bothered reading the film that way before (that said, I've only ever seen it once all the way through), which is kinda bad considering I'm doing a module in Film Studies for part of my degree

I'm taking Film Studies myself - second year - but that film got on my tits long before I got off my arse and went to get an education. "Alex, your dad just won the Academy Award!" Dear oh dear...
  5. today the whole school went to the cinema to see Mamma Mia!. geez how crazy was that!

I simply can't agree there. The way he says "Because you told me to" is clearly a critic to the strict order and the ultra-tight authority which is the Army. And Jenny got AIDS not because being a sult but because she thought that we are 100% free to live our lives, something which is obviously false.
  7. "What Women Want" with Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt. I've seen it a million times already but it still makes me laugh
  8. Star Trek: Nemesis - yesterday on TV
And in the cinema... U2 3D

You could ALMOST have a point. The film was obviously way ahead of its time in that it showed how successful an American idiot could be - well, howdy Dubya! I don't think that the film is critical of the army at all, and the army/Vietnam is shown as a place where one can be successful if one knows how to play table tennis. The film is also cowardly. When they give Jenny AIDS - because she thought she was 100% free to live her life? Don't understand that statement at all - the film makers shy away from nailing down exactly what she's dying of. It is easily the weakest Best Picture winner of the past fifteenm years, and that list includes The English patient and Shakespeare In Love. It was up against Pulp Fiction, Quiz Show (I'm one the relative few who saw it) and THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION! It's a dreadful, wannabe feel good tale of whimsy, and that's how most people bought it - it's not; it's as right wing, in its way, as The Triumph Of The Will. You may have gathered that I can't stand Gump. Hey, even the writer got screwed on this one...

I respectfully disagree there. Titanic was the 5th best movie in the best picture category in 97. Full Monty, As Good As it Gets, LA Confidential, and Good Will Hunting were all better. And Crash was the biggest piece of crap movie ever to win Best Picture. Act One-outrageous stereotypes on parade. Act two- each stereotype reverses course.

God, don't be respectful! Mr Film Studies and I completely forgot about Shite-tanic. You're bang on the money and LA Confidential is a total masterpiece. Crash is ok, but it's no Brokeback.
