Agreed But they aren't that expensive though. At least here in tiny Holland.

    Sound

This show was broadcasted on TV channel WDR for Rockpalast '83. It's just one of the three 'available' TV / Radio Broadcasts on U2start. You can hear all the instruments and vocals quite clearly as you'd expect with plenty of bass and perfect balance.

But I noticed, for about 20-30 seconds, a very clear buzzing sound, which absolutely shot my ears towards the end of An Cat Dubh, which wasn't pretty. The rest of the show sounds like a stretched analogue tape - however, to be still circulating in that good of a quality 25 years later is beyond me, however bad the sound may be.

    Performance

I just felt that the band were restricted at this show. Sure, the members go outside to the barriers and dance everywhere, but they just had nowhere to go. Compare this show with Devore '83 and see what I mean - there seems to be a lot more freedom there. But overall, they're playing top-notch and none of the songs falter.

Some very interesting snippets here, like A Little Peace, America and In The Midnight Hour also make an appearance too. This show would have to be good to consider that Gloria, I Will Follow, Sunday Bloody Sunday, The Electric Co, New Year's Day and ''40'' made up the vast majority of the Under a Blood Red Sky live album.

    Camera

There's lots of closeups here and shots of the audience. But it seemed the cameramen had something for underneath the drums and Larry - see how many shots there are of the drums and Larry. But the camera is stable and doesn't jump too much around and the band all get shown equally being shown what they do best - playing as the greatest band in the world on some of their best songs written to date.

And no poor video effects made their appearance here. Which is a good thing.

Have listened and watched. But I'm out tonight and tomorrow all day. I'll post Sunday.
I like it a lot, but did anyone else find Edge's guitar too quiet at times (video), esp during Electric Co.?

The Edge is also a bit distant with the audio, I must say..
  8. Found some time to start writing my review while listening to the last couple of songs. Here is my full take now.

1983-08-20 - St. Goarshausen, Germany - Loreley Amphitheater

    AUDIO REVIEW

Setlist: A typical War-setlist, with great songs like SBS, Electric Co, An Cath Dubh, Out of Control etc. Nothing wrong here

Performance: Quite good, not the best though. Out of Control is great, as always. SBS was a bit too random for me. Electric Co was another cracker. And U2 didn't extend 40 in the beginning, but the performance was good nevertheless.

Sound: A bit fuzzy. Too much of Adam and Larry, too little of Edge. Bono's voice is very clear though and he sings everything perfect. NYD is fucked up at some point. It fades away and comes back again, and the sound is switching to all sides.

Audience: Enthusiastic, U2 was already a great act that time, and they proofed that here again. I just wonder why they started to whistle after SBS, maybe some Video-reviewer can say that. It's like something bad is happening there.

Summary: Good, not great. Good performance of great songs, highlights were Electric Co, Gloria, An Cath Dubh and Out of Control for me. 8/10 I'd say.

I found it a little quiet - I think the sound crew were playing poker or something, because they didn't do the best job on the sound here. It hisses, it snaps, crackles and pops like a box of Rice Bubbles and sounded like it was being rubbed against metal.

But again, it's one of the best early shows, even if they are a little restricted.
  10. fecking DVD I burned the show to doesn't work on my DVD player. I shall convert it to iPod format though and watch it on there

    Sound:

Great boot especially from 83. Good mix overall, some parts are muffled and the vocals are great. Love Adam's bass. You can actually make out the tones instead of just notes. There are some rough spots but this is a solid sounding boot.

    Performance:

The band was sounding great. Great performances of all the songs. Very energetic

    Highlights:

Twilight - Really enjoyed this one, especially while listening through ear phones
    An Cat Dubh
    Into The Heart
    Surrender
    Seconds
    Gloria - Usually always great

    Overall:

If you like the War era, you need to get this boot! Hell, get this boot anyway, its a great addition to the collection. I would rate this one of the best War shows I've heard. It's a keeper.

This is also a video review of Loreley Video, posted originally by Gerard.

    Sound

Not one of my favourites. I appreciate we're dealing with a 25 year old show here, but I found it a bit muffled. Edge was impossible to pick out at times, especially Electric Co.
Not unlistenable by any means though

    Video - 4 stars
    Audio - 3 stars

    Performance

Very good War show. Not my favourite era, but they gave a good concert here, especially considering it's not a dedicated U2 crowd (which might explain why they're a bit on the quiet side....).
No bad songs, all very solid, but no particular standout. SBS I guess, if I had to pick one.
Was hoping for "and maybe the time is right" on NYD but didn't get it. Shame.

    Overall

One of the best War boots. Audio is worth having in your collection for occasional listening. The video is a must have; easily the best of the tour (until UABRS is available on DVD!).

One question (for Gerard possibly):- I thought Bono didn't associate with the Irish flag at that time? But he wore it during Electric Co? Any light to shed?

Audio - 8/10, have it in your iTunes etc
Video 9.5/10, have it on your iPod / video player.

Over to you Ali for next week; please post your choice tomorrow
