My main "annoyance" is that, obviously, singles sound different to humbuckers, so I try to compensate with a fair bit of compression and gain, but I think I need to cut down on the gain a bit, 'cause I felt it made the riff a bit indistinct...

I didn't think the distortion was too overpowering....maybe just a TAD heavy, but I've heard a lot of different variations on the song, so I wouldn't sweat it. Much better than any attempt I have on tape! (damn me running out of tape and not realizing it!)

Unless you finally publish that poster. That could be hilarious.

lol, good old mp3 players - technology did get something right I guess

It's cool to hear your opinion mate, for sure - I was trying to replicate the Elevation tour version (despite the different key - the backing track I used was in Gb, the Elevation tour version is in G) because a) my favourite version is the Slane DVD (HANDS DOWN, epic performance) and b) because I think Edge nailed the song on that tour tone-wise; perfect level of distortion so it's not blurring stuff out but it's got that oomph, whereas the ZooTV versions are great, but a bit more fuzzy to my lugs, and the Vertigo Tour had no way NEAR enough - the delay was too clear for me. PopMart performances lie somewhere in between Elevation and ZooTV for me

    EDIT

Hahaha....I'm coming back around to this song. For a while I was really burnt out on it.

Yeah, I think I remember you mentioning that - for me though, it's just one of those songs that never gets dull. Great fun to play, better to hear it done by the master though

I mean, the album version is good but the live versions out-do it for me I truly fell for it when I heard the Slane version that a mate had copied onto a live compilation CD he made for me, I was just blown away. Still am, everytime I hear it. It's got the right balance of energy, power and finesse - one of the ultimate rock anthems, but made even more amazing when you consider the subject matter of the lyrics!

I was listening to the Rock & Roll HoF show earlier, and Bono going on about Chris Blackwell and the making of October ("having a 2nd album with God in it?!" etc.) and I just think that's what sets U2 apart - Bono writes about anything and everything, but still hits the spot

Certainly not your typical rock and roller lyricist, that's for sure!

Thanks, Harry. I think I'm off to watch the DVD of this week's BRT show.

And Jeremy - I wish I'd remembered your obsession re. ASOH before I replied to your taking the piss lol! Damn, another opportunity laid low...

Did we stir up a hornet's nest, Harry? Haha. For the record, I was playing along with the Wild Horses forum idea in jest. I don't believe there was any serious thought. Was there Harry?
