1. Some of you may already be familiar with this bootleg, but for those of you who haven't yet had the pleasure...I would STRONGLY recommend giving it a listen.

It's a radio broadcast of a very famous show Bruce did at the Roxy Theater in Los Angeles in July of 1978, one which is commonly acknowledged to be one of the greatest live shows ever (I think it came 7th in a poll conducted a while back in the UK to find the Top 20 Greatest Live Shows of all time...although how they come up with these lists is beyond me...). I think 8 songs from this show were used on Bruce's official Live 1975-85 album also.

I have maybe 35 or so Springsteen shows and this is definitely my favourite. It's from his legendary 'Darkness On The Edge Of Town Tour' and the only other bootlegs that could maybe live with it (IMHO) are U2's Point Depot shows from Xmas'89. The atmosphere is really electrifying throughout due to the intimacy of the venue and the fact that those who did get in are obviously really big fans (he apologises at the start of the show to those poor unfortunates who had queued up all day in the heat and were still unable to get in). The performance itself is just incendiary, and though it is true that bootlegs from later on in the tour (such as the radio broadcast of the Winterlands show in San Francisco from 15-12-78) have fleshed-out versions of some of the "Darkness..." songs, they don't have the electric energy that runs through this set.

Even if you're unfamiliar with Bruce's work or just can't be bothered downloading the whole thing I would strongly urge you to give "The Promised Land", "Racing In The Street", "Thunder Road", "Growin' Up", "Backstreets" (in particular the 5 and a half minute long "Sad Eyes" interlude which was "infamously" cut out of the version of this performance included on the Live 1975-85 release), "Rosalita [Come Out Tonight]", "Independence Day" and "Raise Your Hand" a listen as I don't think live music gets much better than this. The segueway from "Racing In The Street" into "Thunder Road" is particularly spine-tingling.

The files are uploaded individually as I remember only too well how tortuous it can be downloading stuff with dial-up and wanted everyone to be able to hear at least some of this.

I realise that ordinarily you'd just be able to find this at the Bruce Springsteen MP3 Bootleg Index at http://btxmp3index.jconserv.net/index.php (I think there's a link to it in another topic too) but it presently appears to be having some difficulties so I decided to post this anyway.

Hope you like it anyway. Cheers!
