Alot of the time its simply because a recording didnt turn out well and the taper is embarrassed by it. Sure there are also some fantastic things that arent shared as well, but that is not always the case as you point out.
I recorded The Cranberries back in 1995 and it came out very bad (bass overload/bass roll off battery was dead and I was right in front of the speaker stack YIKES). I dont think there is a recording of that show circulating but mine is so bad I would be embarrassed to even trade it. I'm actually a tad embarrassed that my Memphis 97 soundcheck recording is circulating. I traded it to one person and warned them it was terrible. 10 years later its online! LOL
I recorded the Sting's show last year (2006-07-01) and in deed there is no recording circulating, but mine is SO poor that it doesn't deserve surfacing the net. Too embarrasing for me.
