Regarding your comments on WOWY from Paris 87. It is a standout performance. It lasts forever, Bono pours his heart into it, the impro verse is excellent and it just oozes power. Although not my favorite it definitely is a standout.

I agree, I love it. Ok, it's odd when he stops halfway through, but it was a demonstration that they cared about the fans aswell as the music, they weren't just there to be adored - I think it's great (although I still think the Paris '92 is the best I've ever heard )

Paris 92 is great. It's all about the ending though. The whole first half lacks a certain something

  3. For me, WOWY is all about the end and how it builds up from quiet solemn beginnings, it's just that release of emotion and energy that sets a show alight.

the song starts at that part. I like the start and middle sections to be nailed though. ZooTV versions had a bit too much bells and whistles for me. Brussels 86 and Point Depot (26th) both blow me away with their simple understated brilliance. No fancy solos needed

Understated has its bonuses, but for me I do like a bit of grandeur or epicness. The thing for me about Paris '92, the entire show inc. WOWY is just the way Edge bleeds music throughout - the spontaneity of his guitar work on that version of WOWY blows me away (as with WGRYWH and BTBS being other examples), but you can't forget the way Bono just gets lost in the music and, well, there's not much else to say.

We could argue all day long about it. I had my wowy zootv phase but it was only just a phase. The rawness of the older versions just seem to outlast all of the others
  7. I must say the boxing day one from Point Depot is special too. A close call with Paris'92

True. I'm not obsessed with ZooTV, for the most part I like the solo (but a 20 second slot in a 5 minutes plus song? Nah), I just like it in most forms. It just happens that the Paris '92 one was a version that caught me square in the noggin unlike most others. The thing I dislike about a couple of JT versions is Bono's singing, when he kinda mixes between a rocky grunt and his more natural voice, but aside from that there are some special performances

I have a soft spot for PopMart versions though - there's something about them, not sure what, I mean hell - no solo or snippets? Yet they get me everytime.

  9. Hands down, the best WOWY is Croke Park 6-28-87.

    Give it a listen.
  10. I quite like the Vertigo Tour performances (ie U2Communication), more intimate. Though I do like the ZooTV solo + 'shine like stars' snippet as well, probably more. haven't listened to enough to give a definite answer. Paris 1992 better be as good as you say it is Harry
