That might be true in terms of performance quality (I'm not even sure about that, though), but I don't get why someone with a few boots shouldn't be able to judge the sound quality.

Why should he need to compare? Good sound quality is good soundquality. Bad is bad. There's no need for a comparison to know that.

The first bootleg I ever got was Madrid 1987-07-15. When I first heared it, i though "OMG!! Such a terrible sound". Now, I actually KNOW that it's a Very Good audience, and a terrific performance. If I had only have had (no pun, just gramatical tricks) this bootleg, I would still thinking "This sound is crap".

All I'm saying is that you don't need to own 500 boots to give a quality rating about the sound. Sure you'll need a little experience, but a handfull of boots can teach you that.
