    yep, I settled for the itouch. Can games and extra software be installed on it? I just ordered it and the guy in the store told me that you can't install any games or software on it

    (Officially) they need to be bought from the App Store (either on the iPod itself or via iTunes on your PC). I have 4 screens worth of games and other useful apps on my iTouch.

    So he's talking out of his bottom.

    He likely meant that you can't install 3rd party software. But speak to Drew about that, he may respectfully disagree

    He hasnt a clue then because itunes sell games for the touch.

    You don't mind if I respectfully disagree, then?

    The first generation iPod touches can only be modified at this point in time. No second-generation models can be modified - the ones with the volume controls on the side. Do you know which generation you ordered?

    If you get a 1G, you download QuickPwn and literally plug your iPod into the USB port, force it into DFU mode and then the software installs. The great thing is that you can still use iTunes and buy music and apps from the App Store, but as an addition you can theme your iPod and funk it up with Winterboard, use Cydia to download applications and games and generally make it better. It is known as jailbreaking. But before you even try to Jailbreak it, you have to know how to fix it in case you can't boot it properly. I had to restore about ten times before I got it right!

    The games on the Apple Store are actually quite good. I download the free ones quite a lot - I've found some real gems by doing that only. I'm not up to paying $20 for an iPod game. $5 - $10, maybe, but not $20.

    Check out ModMyI.com, iPodTouchFans.com and MacThemes2.net for what you can do. At those stores, they are trained to sell the product as minimal as possible, but you can certainly download games and apps to it from App Store which needs Software Update 2.0 or higher, minimum. The salesman probably did mean third-party apps, but the App Store is open to all with an iTunes account.

  9. Hold down the “Home” button

    Hold down the “Standby” button

    When it says “slide to turn off”, ignore it. It should restart with a blank screen. Look at iTunes, and your device should be removed. Now lift the Standby button, while still holding onto the Home button.

    Keep holding the Home button until the iPod reconnects on iTunes. When the device shows up in iTunes, that’s when you’ll need to lift up your button. If you wait any longer, it will go into Recovery Mode, and that’s not what you want. Your iPod should be blank.

    Now iTunes will tell you that the iPod Touch is in Recover Mode. You can now perform a manual restore on it.


    There you go. And if you force it into DFU mode, you have to restore - I made that mistake many times over.
  10. It's a 2nd generation iTouch, and that's what the guy meant. Cause here, no one buys from iTunes There are CDs out there with games and apps for the iPhone and probably iTough 1G. So he probably meant that you can't use those CDs with it.
    Is it totally impossible, or has it not been done yet?

    I was able to set one up and buy UK-only music tracks in Australia, using an Australian IP address. I also forgot that the 1G touches have been discontinued in a lot of regions around the world, too. The 2nd generation hack isn't totally impossible, but it just hasn't been done yet because it is a lot tougher this time around because of various code changes and whatever else, and the new firmware.

    The original one had a TIFF (picture file) exploit, which was found in a week or two, maybe even less. Then some third-part code was executed which took another few days, with the hackers finding out that homewritten code can indeed be used like the PSP and then it's taken off from there - that's how I heard it happened, anyway from talking to some of the more well-known coders and homebrewers. I haven't heard about CDs with games and apps, but I guess downloading and then copying back the apps would work, so that's what they are. I think that's what he was banging on about.

    The only iPods not hackable or worth hacking are the 6G / 6.5G classics, 3G / 2G nanos and shuffles. All the rest are indeed hackable with Rockbox or iPodLinux. I'd be stupid if I didn't think Apple have been smart second time around and checked heavily for any kind of exploit. The new MacBooks actually block the software from working, so you can't hack it on those.

    I got the iTouch...it's a gift for someone, so I'm not opening it yet. The guy at the store I got it from (different store)...he told me it hasn't been hacked into yet, but it eventually will ...let's see...
    the thing is that I don't think we can even get the free stuff from iTunes for it...
