  2. Hey Drew.....ever changed the backlight on a laptop?


  3. Only once. Apart from replacing a heatsink, it's the biggest pain in the arse. I actually get worried doing it.

    Warning
    CCFL Tubes are small fluorescent bulbs. As such, they contain mercury. It is also likely that they are made with lead glass, which is very brittle and has a low melting point. Avoid shock and unnecessary stresses on the bulb including prolonged periods of high heat (soldering iron). Do not twist or bend your bulb and do not wrap wire around it.


  4. well now i'm a bit scared!

    I started with the inverter, but it's not that. I then pulled the LCD apart and saw that one of the wires that connects the inverter to the actual backlight lamp was black and fried, so I'm gonna have to swap the bulb and wires out. It's a 4+ year old laptop, so it's not the end of the world if it doesn't work, but I thought I'd give it a try. The inverter was 8 bucks on ebay and the lamp and wire harness was $25....we'll see.
  5. If it's only the inverter that's burnt out with leading to the bulb, then that's alright to do and shouldn't be too hard. No worse than changing out a light bulb in a room.

    4+ years for one bulb isn't bad at all. Some burn out after six months - and if you can do it that cheap, then it's worth it. Just be aware not all electronics from eBay work too well - they can break in shipping.

    yeah, i'll let you know. if it doesn't work out, i'll just buy a new one. Decent Dells are only about 400-500 dollars, and i have this beautiful iMac still running perfectly.

Guys (or Drew to be specific)...trying to buy a laptop as you know (and no Mac dan, not enough money!), with the limited budget and all, if I want a Blu-Ray drive, I'm gonna have to trade it with some CPU speed. Like, instead of 2.5, get a 2.2 but with a Blu-Ray drive (no write, just read, can't afford the writers)...in some cases it involves losing some HDD space as well...

    The big question...is it worth it?

    2.2 will play Blu-Ray discs, I'm sure. Were you trying to get a Mac?

    I haven't got Blu-Ray yet (only HDDVD) but from what I hear it's worth it. Someone else would be more better on that than me, but I'm gonna get one - they look pretty good. You want to watch movies, play games, or both - if that's the case, a bigger monitor is better first.
  9. How does Genius in iTunes actually work? After trying with numerous songs, not one can be found in Genius and can't make a generative playlist.

    I've got it to manually manage content on the touch. It makes no sense, and I've tried everything.

    It has to match the iTunes entry. If you've changed anything (eg I have U2-Albums, U2-Singles etc rather than U2) then it won't work.

    Once it does, it's actually pretty good
