 But when you connect it using digital SPDIF interface (optical or coax) it doesnt care how good your soundcard is. It can send lossless LPCM stereo to the speakers and AC3/DTS surround as well. With a good soundcard you are more flexible but its not necessary at all for good quality.

that could do the trick indeed. Optical from each source into that. Not sure if my ears could hear the difference between Dolby Digital and DTS through optical and TrueHD via HDMI through a receiver. Though HDMI can do audio and vdeio through the one cable (but then you need another HDMI from amp to TV. Pros and cons. I'm sure i'll be happy with these.
