Windows XP is almost good!!!! (a great acomplishment, if you consider it's a Microsoft product!!)


    Microsoft has the balls, the brains and the ability to do things right, when they want to. Any company does but it depends on how they do it - anyone who's used iTunes and Nero from an early version right up to the later (bloated) ones will relate to that. You can come up with something awesome in theory, but if in practice it doesn't work as well as in theory, essentially you're fucked.

    Windows 7 is an example of good ideas and so is the new Windows Mobile from what we've all seen there. Internet Explorer 6 would have also been a good product had it not been released alongside such (at the time) an insecure operating system (XP) and not bolted so hard down into the OS - it might have been accepted a bit more by more technical people, not just those who don't know what a CPU or motherboard do.

    Yeah, Sergio, about Firefox - I'm getting that same reaction from many people. ''You don't have the big blue E? I thought you had the internet....I do!!!'', yet when they try Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Konqueror, Safari (although I'd avoid it if you can on Windows) they think ''Wow...my internet is way faster and my web doesn't crash!!!'' Just annoying that people are literally forced onto IE, XP, Office and all those - I know better alternatives but people hate change. I hate change, but if I try it and it works better then I'm all for the change.
  2. I don't know a better alternative for Windows Office, honestly.
    Open Office is heavier and slower (at least it's proved to be that in my computer... everytime I've tried it!!)... the only obvious positive point is that it's free.

    OpenOffice is an excellent alternative - a little bloated but it more than works. I think that's preferrably what I'd install - I mean, I can download Office for free just like anyone but I'd prefer OpenOffice because it works for me and I just can't get used to that new interface.

    I've tried but it's just too hard - and it's been on numerous ocassions in various moods; W7 was easy to work with but Office 07 is just too weird like IE7 / IE8. It (OpenOffice) does work nicely on Linux - that's if anyone actually wants to run it. I'd love to change all my computers to it but just people won't take the time or bother learning.
  4. A bit of a laugh here - I put W7 Home Premium on my laptop earlier tonight and already found a bug. I only have 288GB free on my hard drive of 320GB - for the OS and partitions and whatever. Just like that 4000000 days or whatever it was someone had in Vista.






    And yet, it only took 30 seconds to delete. WTF???
  5. Not really a bug, Windows estimates the amount of files and filesize. That can go wrong when there are a lot of files symlinked to each other. Only way to exactly calculate is by running through the complete file tree. That is quite slow, although it happens while deleting. But then the 'total' amount decreases through the process.

    Deleting is normally a very easy and fast operation since it only removes the index in the 'table of contents of the hardrive'.

    Normally on copy / paste operations Windows adjust their estimation during the progess.

    It was just funny - only 320GB of space yet I magically have nearly three times as much??? Right...

    If you can help with W7, in the Music folder I want the main Music directory where the folders are set up, then going into the folder shows the Title - Type (MP3). How can I get it so the subfolders are showing Title - Artist - Album in the column headers and the main Music folder shows the directories but with the folder name and type? Sorry if I just confused you!

    Like, in Vista I used to be able to go Folder Options, click Apply to All Folders of this type and it would work then but not in 7. Of course not.

  8. Nah I'm confused by it too. More investigation required. Have to say though, it runs really well on 3GB RAM and a dual-core laptop, much more so than Vista ever did.

    I thought I couldn't wipe a Vista install on a laptop as default but apparently I could. It's only an Upgrade but that'll do - apart from the issue of saying my keycode is invalid when it's a legit overpriced copy bought from a big store, so I'll have to get onto MS about that one tomorrow or in the next month or so.

    About the problem with the folder layouts I'm having, the Music folder on the Start menu is a virtual folder isn't it? Maybe that's the reason...maybe...
  9. Its a virtual folder yes. It is a 'library' you can add multiple folders and it will show up as once. Pretty handy.

    I have several documents folders on different drives / partitions that i have linked into one folder

    That's why it's doing it - it's connected to the older folders, which are connected to that folder and so they all take the same layout. Bingo!!!

    I don't know - I don't like the idea of it. It's a good idea in theory but just doesn't work in practice, for me at least.
  11. I don't like how it sounds. Gathering all music files in one big virtual folder? Gosh, that is awful. My Nokia 5220 does that; I don't need my PC to do it.

    You'd love Windows 7 then. I guess if your stuff is rockin' the joint then Virtual Folders works well - otherwise if it's in one folder then it really is kinda redundant. I put my music in a certain way. For example:

    Joe Perry - Have Guitar Will Travel (2009)
    Slingshot - Joe Perry - Have Guitar Will Travel

    No, it doesn't work like that. You put it there and it puts the songs all shoved in together - never mind it's not your actual file you're trying to get at. It's Microsoft's virtual crapshitafuckability idea and it just doesn't seem to work for me. What a pain in the arse. You have to do a registry hack if you wanna get it back - I mean, really.


    One other thing I think is ridiculous - look at this for user interface improvement:



    The rest of W7 is nice but just those two things I find mind-boggling and why they couldn't have been improved before release.


    Not one folder. It Is like copying one folder to another, but without actually copying them


    Basically what happens is you go into each VF, set up a list of folders you want to show in that virtual folder (Music, Video, Pictures and any others you want to set up - you can make your own) and then it puts a virtual listing of all gathered files in that folder so you don't have to go hunting over a massive-arse drive or search too hard for them.

    Confusing in theory but when you see it and try it you'll understand it....it's awfully confusing to explain.
