Isn't it sturdy enough to stand a few drops and scratches? The iPod Touch has proven itself to be a damn tough piece of shit, it's drop off my hands onto concrete floors a good bunch of times and it's still mint.
I, for one, live in a world where scratches and dents are unacceptable on my shiny pieces of gadget goodness. That said, I'm not a fan of protective covers. So I adapt to become ultra careful when handling my prized possessions.
I always have a go at people who do not take care of their devices. Really annoys me
Haha nah i bought it to record my jam sessions, but id probably take it to a U2 concert next time they come, should be able to get a nice 4.5 star recording.

I doubt it. Its internal microphones are good but no near as good to give you more than a 3 or 3.5 (depending on your location) stars recording. To improve that, you have to get a pair of external mics and a power source for them. Give this a look: http://www.u2start.com/topic/by-post/463208/ (the recorder is a Zoom Q3HD, the little brother of your gizmo).
