For the external drives, I've found 200GB is more than adequate. I use a 320GB self-built Seagate drive which backs up crap loads of discs and my entire computer which I do every month or so. Definitely worth getting yourself one - they're dirt-cheap now that there's 2TB coming in for around $300 here.
