Me too, did the same with HTDAAB (for 1 month though). I still know when I got it and put it in my stereo for the first time. Vertigo made a decent impression, Miracle Drug was allright. COBL, SYCMIOYO and OOTS however were instant favourites of me after the first listen. Coincidence or not, these are the best tracks. I find that strange, because a real album usually needs time to grow on you.

  2. I agree completely--because you've got 1) a debut and 2) unpolished work. Hopefully overproduction doesn't kill this new record like it did for Bomb.

I remember first listening to Achtung Baby; the first couple of bars into Zoo Station, I actually thoguht "what the fuck is this?" lol, just standing around in my kitchen cooking dinner. Funny thing was, I guess that's what they wanted everyone to think, judging by Adam's comments in U2 by U2. It's weird, I have such clear memories of listening to each album, I think the one that left the most lasting impression on me was October, and it's still one of my favourite. However, Achtung Baby has grown into my number one spot, and I doubt it'll move anytime soon, new album or no. JT was pretty instant, same with HTDAAB, but AB was the one that really got into my system. If the new album comes somewhere between AB and JT, I'll be happy - I'm not expecting the greatest album ever made, I've given up listening to people and reading into the media because the only way I'll be convinced one way or the other is, well, I don't know what to be honest lol...
  4. First time I listened to AB and JT I listened it once completely and I thought ''Are this really the masterpieces of U2''? Then I started to listen it by times and now and then a track and live songs from that album from other tours which I was going to love. Well and then, you gonna listen the album over again and again and you are gonna remember certain parts which you like and at the end you think ''Yes these records are really U2's masterpieces ''

But with the new album I will not be the same, because it's the first time for me that I'm really looking out for a new release so I just will be playing it over and over again. Even if it's crap I suppose. To sort out the little good bits.

    Good night mates.
  5. I have just woken up to this news about the album and I have to say I'm somewhat gutted. I'm glad they finally said something official but this isn't what I was expecting. The next four or five months are gonna be torture, but if it means a better album I can live with it. That's one hell of a delay though. Talk that they'd finished in the studio must have been very premature... Oh well, we've got the UBRS DVD to ties us over before then lads!
  6. I read last few pages of this topic written after that U2.com news and it's interesting how everyone was optimistic at the beginning (of that last few pages) and by the end everyone became pessimistic.

In my opinion they know that they have great songs but they want this album to be really extraordinary so they'll keep on working on it for few more months. And hell, I'm waiting for this album for 4 years, few more months won't kill me.

The thing I like the most about Bonos message is that he claims that they're building music upon Larry's idea. And we all know who Larry is, he's not the guy with flowers in his hair.
And if you take that they wanted to write music just for the sake of music then this so-called "delay" makes sense.

Again, Bono mentioned AB and JT. And you don't do that unless a) you're sure you have some extraordinary material // b) you're stupid as jackass. You know, Bono has that big mouth full of hype, but he's not stupid. If you build hype day after day and you don't have really great record, fans will break your teeth.

Somebody even called Bono "stupid little man" or something like that. Why? How could you call stupid anyone with who you grew, from whom you have learned, somebody who maybe even changed your life?

So just be patient and look at the bright side. I guarantee that boys won't let us down.

That's a great post. Somebody to bring the optimism back!

Gerard's comments were regarding ATYCLB, and to be honest I think they're warranted, if slightly over-emphatic, and I think we are all entitled the right to call people what we will, it's a value that we all treasure - we are entitled to disagree with one another, but that doesn't mean we can't voice an opinion.

He wasn't calling Bono a stupid little man, end of; he was referring to Bono's claim that he wanted ATYCLB to be an album of 12 singles, and the ideal album format is not built around 12 singles - such a thing is not feasible. One can have an album of 12 great tracks, but not all great tracks are singles - look at all the albums they've ever released; each one is a mix of standout and lowkey tracks with regard to their status, not necessarily their musical content.
