1. am i the only one who thinks Survival is the worst song the've ever done? dreadful lyrics (we're talking Rebecca Black standard!) set to the same sub-Queen arrangements. as NME says, as much as it pains me to admit, Muse may have fully jumped the shark with this one.

at least the dubstep elements on the new album may breathe some fresh air into them, because they're verging on self-parody nowadays.
  2. Lyrics might be its weakest point (specially the verses), I agree. But damn, it's a pretty awesome piece of classic rock music!!!
  3. I can list several Muse songs that fall below Survival in both the musical and lyrical department.

Lyrically, Butterflies and Hurricanes seems absolutely dreadful because it's only got 3 unique verses repeated throughout the entire song. But they are simple and powerful, especially when combined with the rest of the song.

This is a classic case of the whole being more than the sum of its parts.
  4. BBC on Survival.

"It is dramatic, triumphant and uplifting. Or, to those less enamoured, it's bombastic, pompous and vaguely totalitarian."

Anybody who follows Muse will know that both of these conclusions are simultaneously and absolutely correct.

Butterflies And Hurricanes is a masterpiece from second 0 and one of Absolution's and even Muse's highlights, I cannot accept the comparison. Sorry.

I agree on your next post tho
  6. My point with Butterflies And Hurricanes is that from a lyrical standpoint, it is very similar to Survival. Both lyrics carry a straightforward message and both can be classified as war-chants, per say. The musical aspect of the song is the driving force behind Butterflies And Hurricanes and is essentially what makes it a masterpiece. The piano section in the middle is also extremely fitting for the song's title which is a clear comparison or even a coexistence of two polar opposites. I consider Butterflies And Hurricanes to be my favorite Muse song because of that beautiful dichotomy.

Survival can actually be seen as a "tamed version" of Butterflies And Hurricanes, a version more suited for those not used to the typical intensity Muse brings to the table.
  7. Ok, I misundertood ya. Masterpiece of a description you threw there, mate... B&H is probsbly my favorite Muse song as well. Maybe paired with Citizen Erased, and slightly ahead of Stockholm Syndrome.
  8. Well, thinking deeply about it, B&H is DEFINITELY my favorite song by Muse, and probably my favorite song of the new century as well. Citizen Erased and Stockholm Syndrome are special for different reasons and both make me go crazy, but nothing equals Butterflies And Hurricanes' complexity and perfection. I really hope I get to see it live some day.
  9. Survival shouldn't be used in the same sentence as B&H, which is up their with their best imo.
  10. This reaction to this song being the Olympic song actually made the 6pm news here. People bitching about it, they can feck off.
  11. Looks like I'm going to see them after all! Going to Hamburg the 15th of december!
