1. yeh...its def. a generation thing. I'm 22 and whenever I talk about U2 which is usually all the time, people love to bash em. I've learned to not listen though. People have no idea what their talking about. Next time someone says they hate Bono or U2..just be like...really...you know that song...with or without you...sbs...beautiful day...one...well yeh that was all by U2...they will shut up...it works everytime!!!
  2. Naturally, in a sick society the sane ones get bashed. I consider the modern first- world self- centered materialistic life a sickness. Additionally, those who are the first and best in what they do are always among the ones who get bashed the most because they polarize. U2 proved that with at least three radical style changes, continually scaring off a lot of old fans and still being around by gaining more. So while U2 are still the most successful band on earth with Bono being more preachy than ever, what reason should there be to calm down the message? Should they be afraid to scare off some more longtime fans? Come on, get a life.

I think music is only a vessel, and the message is what's really important. The better the vessel, the more will listen, and Bono managed to maneuver into a status where he's being heard by everybody on the planet. I love U2s music, but if Bono would stop to step on people's toes I'd start to think there must be something going wrong with him.

BTW, Jesus stepped on a lot of toes when he spoke about God's kingdom, too. He refused to calm down his radical message to become easier accessible. I believe it's our job as Christians to do what Jesus did and to follow in his footsteps, no matter whether we're getting bashed for it or not.

  3. I like what Bono does...I'm just worried that this new wave of Bono-Hate that's started might damage his plans and his campaigns ... that's why I say maybe he should change some of his manners...it's to avoid that.
  4. I think some things get mixed up here.
It's a good thing that Bono is trying to help Africa (even if I tdisagree with the way he's trying to help). If that activism has an effect on his songwriting, music style, delay on new releases - fine. I don't blame him for that. Alex pointed out that the band ows me nothing.

But, a different thing is his preaching during concerts. Like I mentioned before, when I buy a ticket for a show, I pay to see a band playing music... entertainement. I don't pay to hear a hypocrite telling me what I have to do.
If you wanna raise awareness during the concerts, do it through song lyrics. Use pictures of starving children on the screens, bring up activists on stage before the show instead of an opening act, buy medicaments from the billions you make on one tour and donate them - whatever.

Or just play more songs, to equal the length of the monologues. Then I'm fine with the speaches. I'm gonna use the time to grab some beers.

I wouldn't go so far as to call Bono a hypocrite, sure I hear the accusation all the time but I think he does good with his voice, using his celebrity bullshit for something good. He has said over and over that if he gave money publicly it would change what he's doing, think the quote is from Music Express a couple years ago, I'm sure Bono does much more behind the scenes then he lets on.

We've always loved B for his grandiosity, this is just a much more unsexy version of it, but he is attacking it with the same tenacity he uses during "the electric co" for example.

Love his work it just sucks to see his image sink within some circles

Well, I don't doubt that he's donating money.
I just call him a hypocrite because he preaches equality but yet the working girls in his "own" factory get a lower wage than europeans get for the same work...
