U2 accepted this opportunity to do an advert for the i pod because

There is not a huge amount of difference between that and appearing on the X Factor in my opinion.
No, not really.
Apple and U2 had a contract where Apple would promote U2 by putting loads of their stuff on the home page on the Store, creating a huge U2 page, making an exclusive discography full of their albums and songs. Meanwhile, U2 were releasing an iPod. They really had no option to that advert. They were basically promoting each other, by U2 playing Vertigo over the advert to promote iPod, which would subsequently promote the song as well. Anyway, Vertigo was massive from the word go. It wasn't solely because of that Apple advert, everyone had heard of it before that.
Whereas, Coldplay are going on to a show because Chris Martin says that he is a massive fan of the show. And they want to promote, I'm presuming, 'Charlie Brown'. They already have enough publicity in the UK, they are huge. Why not do it on the American version of The X Factor, in a country where Coldplay haven't really hit that big.
