It sounds so much like a Parachutes-era song but propelled by heartache. It is one of my favorite vocals by Chris ever.

Yeah, it's said to be Spies + 42, I've read it from various people. It's surely one of the few that's truly good from this album.

I have a gut feeling this album will be a grower after several listens so I'm going to keep listening to it in a hope that my opinion changes for the better. I still think it is only just good while being extravagantly tame.

You'd better rehearse Amsterdam or the title song Although I admit that a live debut is always exciting, A Whisper ain't the most brilliant song to rescue from that album to me.
EDIT... Maybe I never paid enough attention to it though, I'm listening to it now and it reminds me of Shiver - which is obviously great news!

I gotta say despite my hateful post a page or two ago, I listened to the album today and it's growing on me..an acquired taste maybe. But the only song I'm having a lot of trouble with still is Ink. It's way too much in the Wild Honey vein, a really sappy shitty song surrounded by good ones.

Agreed Ink is really awkward, it brings the whole thing down for a minute there.
