You may be surprised now, but I did like them.

Actually, I don't have a problem with god(may there be one or not), I have a problem with religion. And religious people are often trying to find religious meanings and confirmation for their beliefs in every single line Bono's ever written - and I can see this happen when we're trying to find out the meaning of Wake up dead man.

That's where my comment comes from.

Fair enough man...let's see how this one goes...
  5. Umm. I'm a bit behind. Would it make any difference if I said no to WUDM?

    Only joking....

You ain't showin' up Dan!! And yep...it would make a difference, I won't review it if you say no!
  7. And I can't review this song at all if we need to keep religion out of this song . And incidentally I was not at all religious. It's only U2 that has awoken whatever religious thoughts I has hidden in my heart.

  8. Sorry, I'll rephrase that because I do mean thoughts about God rather than religion because I agree that religion very often gets in the way of God.

I never said that religion has to be kept out of the reviews. Especially Wake up dead man is full of traditional religious images. But I think one can write a review without trying to praise one's god all the time.

Okay, let's see what I can make of this one. This is a call for help. A call to get things straight.

    Jesus, Jesus help me
    I'm alone in this world
And a fucked up world it is too
Tell me, tell me the story
    The one about eternity
And the way it's all gonna be

The narrator is pretty desperate. He is alone and full of fear, so he calls the highest authority for help he can think of. He wants to hear the story about eternity again - like a scared child that can't go to sleep without hearing the same old bedtime story for the umpteenth time.

Wake up, wake up dead man
Wake up, wake up dead man

This one's tough. I'm not quite sure who is the receiver of this appeal. Might be the narrator, who is spirtually dead, might be Jesus (which seems most plausible to me) or any other of the prophets, might be god...

    Jesus, I'm waiting here boss
I know you're looking out for us
But maybe your hands aren't free
Your father, He made the world in seven
    He's in charge of heaven
Will you put in a word in for me

The narrator seems to become a little impatient. He knows that Jesus is watching mankind, so why doesn't he come and help? Maybe he is busy with something else?
So, if Jesus can't come to help, maybe he can put a word in for the narrator to get a nice stay in heaven, to restore his faith...

Listen to your words they'll tell you what to do
Listen over the rhythm that's confusing you
Listen to the reed in the saxophone
Listen over the hum of the radio
Listen over sounds of blades in rotation
Listen through the traffic and circulation
Listen as hope and peace try to rhyme
Listen over marching bands playing out of time

This is the answer the narrator gets. The answers on his questions are all there, he just needs to take the time and listen...

Jesus, were you just around the corner
Did You think to try and warn her
Or are you working on something new
If there's an order in all of this disorder
Is it like a tape recorder
Can we rewind it just once more

The narrator still isn't satisfied. This verse refers to Eve and the fall of man. He wants to know if Jesus was watching Eve when she sinned and if he thought about warning her or if he already worked on something different, since he knew that man would fuck it all up anyway.
The narrator wonders if there is a plan in all this mess (like a road to salvation) or if the world works like a tape recorder - just rewind and press play before Eve ate from the Tree of Conscience.

I think yeah answered you well Lady G, and after all, what he's saying is just his opinion, there is no rule in a round table, you can say whatever you think is right.
  12. I think his review is very sound. And will always respect and receive another opinion gladly. He did answer well.
I would like to add to it though. But can't do it just now.
