1. As a die-hard soccer fan in the USA I'm on my knees praying that they win this thing. It would bring so much more popularity to the sport. I know soccer in America is growing, but it will never keep pace with Europe. Many times on the news when there is a soccer game, they just report the score, showing 5+ minutes of a baseball game. For example, yesterday- the Cubs and Sox both played a baseball game, just a regular game and got a lot more TV time than the USA team that defeated the #1 ranked team in the world. The highlights were shown at the end of the Sports segment.

I know it will take light-years for soccer to click in this country, but I'm just hoping and praying that Sunday will give us a victory, and who knows...maybe we will actually see the USA on the front cover of the sports section instead of one of the middle pages next to an Olympic trial for women's weighlifting competition (in today's Chicago Tribune).

Sorry I like to ramble, I'm just an avid soccer fan- have been playing since I was 5 and have season tickets to my local soccer team of the MLS- the Chicago Fire, and have seen the USA compete many of times in person (including last game World Cup Qualifier vs Honduras).
  2. Too bad that USA ended up losing. They played world class soccer in the first half then came out absolutely flat in the 2nd half. I am proud of them going as far as they did, but I wish we won the gold.
  3. What a great day for football fans it is today

  4. Correction - a few footy fans. Most of us kicked off last weekend (for better or worse lol...)

  5. *cough*7-1*cough*:P

  6. And now we've sacked the manager after two games of the season, madness...bit of work and we'll become the next Newcastle...

    *shakes head in despair*
  7. I'm shocked by the things that happened during the Carling Cup match between West Ham and Millwall. Hopefully such incidents won't start happening again.

'Tis all we can hope - some people are complete idiots and deserve the consequences for their actions. Unfortunately racism rears its ugly head now and then (far too much in my opinion) and the kind of people who willingly consort in such incidents are disgraces to themselves and everyone who is connected with them. Unfortunately this sort of thing isn't restricted to any one place and all we can do is to fight it whenever it occurs. How, is another matter entirely. Kudos to the police who did what they could.

I support the FA's decision to find out who got involved and give them a ban on attending football matches for the rest of their lives. We should do the same with our idiots.
  10. Brilliant. Yesterady we won in Belfast and are most likely to make it to the first major tournament for our national team. How did your countries do?
  11. 5-1 and going to RSA , should be a good summer

  12. Must be the first time in years that we've qualified comfortably for an international tournament? Last I remember anything remotely similar was qualifying for '98 - I think Italy were the only major stumbling block. But Capello's done a fine job and I'm looking forward to it; there's a slim chance I might be in RSA next year but it's pretty remote. Also glad to see Italy are on the verge, but Poland aren't looking too clever, especially after sacking Beenhakker. Ahh well.
