Impossible for a club to make money back on signing Lionel Messi through shirt sales. Messi on £100m a year. Clubs get around 7% commission on shirt sales. About £5. New club needs to sell 20m extra shirts a year to cover the cost of Messi. Barcelona sell about 2m shirts a year

I don't think money itself will be the biggest issue here, biggest challenge might be to fit it in with the financial fairplay rules. I also read something about a combined deal with New York City FC; 3 years (Man) City, then 2 years NY City.
