1. Hey
I am just getting into the bootleg thing, so I apologize if I am a little slow here. I can't seem to burn the bootlegs that I get from this site to a CD. I can play them fine on WMP, but can rip them on there. Any suggestions?
  2. Firstly, welcome to U2Start

If you'd like to pop to the 'Welcome to U2Start y'all' forum and say hi that would be great.

I assume if you've got the files playing on your PC you must have managed to extract them from their .rar files ok?

In that case I'm not sure why. They're just mp3 so they should burn. I've always used iTunes and never had an issue.

The guy you need is Drew. Keep this topic active and I'm sure he'll come along to help out.

Keep enjoying the site and the boots!
  3. Thanks for the welcome. I will pop by the welcome thread to say hi.

Yeah, I extracted them to my PC with no issues at all. I just can't figure out why they won't burn to a disk. As you mentioned, it seems like this should be the easy step.

I can't burn MP3 files directly onto a CD correct? In the past with MP3 files, I have had to rip them onto windows media player and then burn them to a CD from there.

Sorry if all of this seems very basic, but like I said, I am new to this. I would love to figure this out so I don't have to pay for the bootlegs I want.

I won't welcome you now, waiting for you to post that topic in the Welcome forum!

About the CD, you CAN burn mp3s to a CD directly, there is no problem with that. But of course, you'll only be able to use the CD in a CD player which supports mp3.

To burn them directly, you can use windows itself, just insert a blank CD, copy and paste the mp3s you want into the CD drive (from My Computer). Then on the left menu click on "Write these files to CD" and it will open a wizard for it, a few simple steps and it starts burning.

If you don't want to burn them directly, i.e., you want them converted to cda or something like that so that it can be used in any CD Player, then I would suggest using Nero or any other CD burning software if you have one (and if you don't, iTunes can do it for you, I'm sure there are much better free software out there for it, but I don't know them).

If you're using a CD Burning software, then look for a way to make Audio CDs (In Nero, just in the beginning you can select "Make Audio CD"), then you just have to select the mp3s and the software does the work for you.

Hope it helps...Drew can surely help you more.
  5. Ok, got it. Feel like an idiot now for asking that was so simple.

Now I am working on the gap issues I saw discussed in another thread. I see why some people pay for these things. It is time consuming

Don't hesitate to ask anything...we all learn from it

Aw, thanks for the mention. I've posted some topics relating back to this ages ago:

    http://u2start.com/topic/3254/
    http://u2start.com/topic/2872/
    http://u2start.com/topic/2628/

The software you want (if you're using Windows):

    MP3directcut: http://mpesch3.de1.cc/
    Foobar2000: http://www.foobar2000.org/
    MP3 encoder: http://lame.sourceforge.net/
    Foo_burninate: http://www.foobar2000.com/components/index.html
    CDBurnerXPPro: http://cdburnerxp.se/
    Ahead Nero: www.ahead.de

Relating to that software, if you don't have Nero it doesn't matter - but Foobar2000 uses it for writing which I unfortunately discovered later on when all my discs kept failing - CDburnerXPPro will still burn audio CDs gaplessly as long as you made those files gapless earlier. Make a backup in case something goes wrong - and it certainly can.

For Burninate, you need to have Nero installed. That Foo_burninate.dll needs to be copied into a folder called C:\Program Files\foobar2000\components. Add your files to the Foobar2000 window (drag and drop them in) then right-click on them all and choose Write Audio CD.

Drop in a disc into your burner and click Write. Then hopefully you'd made the files gapless earlier - and then see what happens.

You can burn MP3s directly onto a CD as a Data CD but CD players and WMP won't recognise it properly. And you should never pay for bootlegs.

    Good point Drew
    Missed that before.

And you're welcome for the mention; I think you've proved above why we named you

What else do I need to mention? Oh yeah - if the files are for example 160Kbps don't rip them at 320Kbps because they sound worse, but that should be obvious. Also - using MP3directcut removes some of the ID3 tag information - you need to replace that when moving it back into WMP or whatever program you use.
