Are U2 fans ready for a Licks type tour?
    But at least include these:
    I Will Follow
    Sunday
    Pride
    Streets
    Still Havent Found
    With Or Without
    One
    Mysterious Ways
    The Fly
    Beatiful Day
    Elevation
    Vertigo

They can pick 13 more for the rest as far as I'm concerned. Oh, and you will see about 5 new songs live, so make that 8.

I was thinking about that the other day! It would be excitiing if they did all 3 stadiums, arenas, and theatres in the same city. Imma use Vertigo as an example :

Stadium : standard stadium show 4th leg.

Arena : more variety like An Cat Dubh, Miracle Drug, Instant Karma, Zoo Station.6-7 changes to the stadium show

    Theatres : REALLY RADICALLY DIFFERENT!

    1. City of Blinding Lights
    2. Beautiful Day
    3. Vertigo
    4. Are You Gonna Wait Forever?
    5. The Electric Co.
    6. An Cat Dubh
    7.October
    8. New Year's Day
    9. Miracle Drug
    10. Sometimes
    11. Bad
    12. Sunday Bloody Sunday
    13. Bullet the Blue Sky
    14 Miss Sarajevo
    15.Pride
    16. Streets
    17. One

    18. The Fly
    19. Mysterious Ways
    20. With Or Without You

    21. Fast Cars
    22. Original of the Species
    23. Yahweh
    24. One Tree Hill

SBS: from Bloody Sunday to IRA bombings to CoeXisT
Bullet: from El Salvador to NRA to nuclear arms to Iraq...

    you get the idea

They all made it into U23D where they wanted to showcase the most 'classic' songs to summarise the U2 experience for those who had never seen them live.

    I agree

Nice to see you here again Eddie btw

I totally agree also. They're three of my U2 faves and deserve their place on U23D (not that the film has made its way to Australia yet!) However even the classics can get a bit too comfortable.

SBS and The Fly both spent some time off the setlist and I believe they sounded all the better for it when they returned.

The Fly in particular wasn't played during Popmart and it came back with a radically different, but excellent rendition during the Elevation tour.

Just like Even Better than the Real Thing will be a breath of fresh air when U2 decide to make way for it in the future.

  4. First of all, I want to make a preliminary statement: I've been listening to the U2 music for a long time and I have to say it has a lot if qualities but I think U2 express the best of themselves in their concerts. Unfortunately, I've never seen u2 live but, by listening to their bootlegs, I'vegot a general idea. In my opinion their "classics", such as for exsample "One", "Street", "Pride" etc, will be performed in every setlist of their future concerts because they "satisfly" casual fans. I personally don't dislike these songs. I don't make a great distinction between "classic" and "favorites", I think it's only important that all these songs will be performed in a good way. As for the latest tour, I've much appreciated "City blinding light" and "Love and pace", I've got excited also by Bono's final solo in "Sometimes...", a very special one.
  5. I think that anyone who pays a good chunk of money to go to see a U2 show is probably more than a casual fan. I would guess that 90% of people at any given show have at least a copy of JT and AB at home. So with that in mind, couldn't you please everyone by just varying up the songs from those 2 albums? Leave in One, Streets, and WOWY and ISHFWILF. As much as I like Running to Stand Still, Bullet the Blue Sky, Untill the End of the World and Mysterious Ways. They are not the only songs that people want to hear. I think a song like Exit or Ultraviolet would be just as well received by most of the audience. As far as SBS, NYD, Pride, etc. Rotate them. Play 2 out of the three and space them out throughout the setlist. That classics section on the Vertigo tour got so boring.

The problem is not how often they play them. The actual problem is that lately they've been performng that songs with virtualy no energy, with the same mood as when I make my Maths exercises every day. Got me?

Well, they need to reinvent themselves and reinvent those songs. Electric Co, Bad, An Cat Dubh, I Will Follow, Gloria, Discotheque (at the few shows it was played at) - I wouldn't expect 'casual' fans to have a copy of Boy, Pop, October or even The Unforgettable Fire - probably the later stuff - was pretty popular.

But songs like One, Beautiful Day etc etc are tired now.

    You're spot on.

I love the classics but also want to hear variety. I want to come out of a U2 show thinking "Wow, they hit all the right buttons tonight, but I never expected them to play THAT song!"

U2 had this mindset during Vertigo, ripping out Electic Co., An Cat Dubh, Miss Sarajevo and One Tree Hill etc during various stages of the tour.

They must do away with the "tired" classics to re-explore some "lost" classics. That's what Edge does best!

  9. Each song should stay for three tours then take a break. Or be on one tour but not the next. I guess an example is The Fly.

It was played on ZooTV, knocked out in Popmart, re-introduced in Elevation and Vertigo.
  10. I'd really love to hear Please, Gone, Mofo, God Part II, Mothers Of The Disappeared (more often), I Threw A Brick Through A Window, October, Tomorrow, Wire, Spanish Eyes, Zooropa, The Wanderer, Stay ( Far away, So Close!), Wake Up Dead Man, The Ground Beneath Her Feet, Electrical Storm, Hawkmoon 269, Dirty Day, Love Is Blindness, Walk On, New York, Trip Through Your Wires, Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses, A Sort Of Homecoming...
    on the next tour .

Of course, this list is huge, but when you drop Bullet The Blue Sky, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Pride (In The Name Of Love), almost every How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb-song (except Original Of The Species and Vertigo, and sometimes City Of Blinding Lights and Miracle Drug),
and when they play Beautiful Day, New Year's Day, I Will Follow, One, Electric Co. less, some of the mentioned songs could be re-introduced every night. Others could be played randomly.

With or Without You, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, Where The Streets Have No Name, All I Want is You, 40 and Bad should be played (almost) every night.

    That's my wishlist

You forget that there will be new songs to play: based on recent tours it will probably take up around 8 songs each concert. Add that to the 10 songs they more or less HAVE to play (the classics) and another set of songs they NEARLY HAVE to play (such as Mysterious ways, the Fly etc. - songs you would expect but that you probably wouldn't be appalled at if they left out)
Therein also lies a few issues for the band: time-wise it wouldn't make sense to reinvent & practise all of those songsyou mentioned to perforrm each of them two/three times per tour. More than likely they will do for the next tour as what they did for Vertigo: pick a certain set of songs they hadn't played in a while & play them 10 times plus, provided they are going down well and feel right (which is apparently why they gave up on Discotheque). Another issue is Bono's voice, despite sounding very good in the film its nowhere near as good as they days of...say Zoo TV. Most probably you're not going to hear him perform a rendition of Lemon or UF ever again.

And while maintain that U2 concerts are mainly for the hardcore fans in today's world you're not going to hear them perform songs they were never comfortable with or that didn't get the crowd going when they were recently released. Zooropa is my favourite song and clearest example of this. I could imagine going to Croker next year for one (or all) of the concerts, and were the band to actually play it I could imagine most people going "What's this?"

At the end of the day I think you have to accept that the casual fan has not heard of the songs I referred to as "favourites". Even then most of the corporate crowd that turn up at these things probably wouldn't even register as casual fans.
  12. It 's not easy to plan a setlist. It's always the balance between classics and fan favorites.

If you look at the setlists of Bruce Springsteen, you see that he doesn't play all the hits but mostly fan favourites (for instance Badlands).

If you look at the the current tour of The Cuure, they play over 35 (!) songs eacht night. With such a list you can do classics and favourites.

My opinion is that a U2 show should care a minimum of 27 songs, with such a repertoire.

They can do 9 new songs, 9 classics and 9 favourites and classics and favourites should be roulated.

An example of a setlist oculd be:

    1. Mofo/Streets/Zoo station/COBL
    2. new song
    3. Electric co./The fly/Vertigo
    4. new song
    5. I will follow/Gloria/Elevation
    6. new song
    7. I still haven't found what I'm looking for/Beautiful day/New Year's Day
    8. etc.
