    Bono's bin is no laughing joke.

    At a New York auction of designer waste bins, a custom-designed Vipp bin by the U2 frontman sold for the highest price of 30,000 dollars. Bono's Trash, which contained unpublished lyrics off the Irish band's next album, including a tribute to Nelson Mandela on his 90th birthday, set a new record price.

    REM's Michael Stipe, actress Mena Suvari, rapper Q-Tip and supermodel Christy Turlington also put their own stamp on the handmade pedal bins, and theirs averaged around 1,750 dollars per bin.

    "I have been very fortunate in my career and life, so it's an amazing feeling to be able to support the people who dedicate a large part of their lives to helping others," said Helena, who contributed three bins to the auction.

    Hosted by Danish supermodel Helena Christensen, the silent auction, which was held at the Winston Wachter Fine Art Gallery in Manhattan on September 18, raised over 60,000 dollars for Food Bank For New York City and Chernobyl Children's Project International.

    All aboard edge's €15m 'hip ship'

    U2 GUITARIST The Edge has revealed how he has fulfilled a dream by buying a €15m luxury yacht.

    It was recently claimed that Bono had splashed out a small fortune on the Cyan, a 140-foot yacht with six cabins and accommodation for 12 guests.

    But Edge spoke out last night to the Irish Independent to put the record straight.

    "It's not Bono's yacht at all, it's mine. Bono doesn't know a thing about boats," he said.

    "For years it was a dream of mine to own a yacht, but to be honest, it was a bit out of my league. So myself and a few friends got together, chipped in, and bought the Cyan. I don't know where the story that Bono owns it came from."

    And Edge's wife Morleigh Steinberg has spent the past few months in the south of France overseeing a total redesign of the yacht, which included a new paint job.

    Edge added: "She's now been totally refurbished and we're really happy with her. Morleigh has totally overseen all the work onboard and it's great. So it's now a really hip ship!"

    The Cyan has a long list of luxuries, including an on-deck jacuzzi, a state-of-the-art music system, a swimming platform, large dining area and a luxury bar. It was built in 1997 by Codesca Yachts and commanded a charter price of between e140,000 and e175,000, depending on how long it was being hired for.

    Edge and Bono own a luxury villa beside the beach in Eze-sur-mer on the French Riviera, where neighbours include superstars Elton John, Tina Turner and Michael Flatley.

    While Bono has often been snapped on the beach or entertaining friends during his annual break, Edge and his family are very rarely pictured on their holidays there.

    Edge also owns a home in Killiney in south county Dublin, as well as a property near Malibu in America.

    And the guitar ace, who recently starred in a documentary film with guitar greats Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin and Jack White of The White Stripes, is now dividing his time between enjoying the yacht and finishing the next album.

    A spokeswoman for the band revealed: "There won't be much public activity from the band until next year. They're still perfecting the album, which won't be released until next year."

    And she said that their office was receiving constant queries from fans and reporters alike over whether the band would play Croke Park, the Phoenix Park or the O2 venue as part of next year's world tour.

    "The tour plans haven't been confirmed at all, but they certainly will be playing Dublin. It is their hometown after all," she added.

    Global activist and U2 frontman Bono attended the United Nations General Assembly in New York to push world leaders to join his ONE campaign in fighting disease, poverty, and hunger. He talked to CNN's John Roberts on "American Morning" about recent successes and what's next.

    ROBERTS: All this talk has been about the economy collapsing, $700 billion bailout. Congress is absolutely absorbed with that. Did that in any way affect what you were trying to do this week? Are people more focused on this economy than in helping out developing nations?

    BONO: We got good news this week. I know normally I'm on your program with bad news -- the whingeing rock star -- but it's great. There's a disease, malaria -- it's 3,000 African kids die every day of mosquito bites. Sounds mad, but it's true. And people have committed and it looks like the funds are on the table so that that disease will be no more by 2015. That makes people like me punch the air and everyone who wears a ONE T-shirt and all our white band campaigners on college campuses all over the country -- it was a great day for them yesterday so we're celebrating that. I know it's extraordinary, that while you're having this meltdown on the markets, that people could even concentrate on this stuff, but I'm really grateful that they did. We had both [presidential] candidates make very powerful statements about the necessity for nonmilitary tools, for instance, in foreign policy. This is an America that both candidates want to show to the rest of the world -- the greatness of America.

He was supposed to have met with Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, but fate – or perhaps an emergency phone call from Larry Mullen Jnr – intervened and they could only manage a quick chat on the phone. I can imagine the phone call from Larry "Ah, look, Bono, seriously, the answer is no. This is not cool. If I wake up in the morning and see a photo of you and Sarah Palin on the front page of the paper, you are out of the band."
