I wonder if he had a similar scare to Ronnie Wood, a spot on his lungs etc. that had to be removed.
The booze/smoke had some effect but I think the main thing that gave him the voice problem was the overuse of his voice, all the straining on Lovetown did a lot of damage on his voice.
The difference of his voice 1989/Early 1990 to his 1991 voice is huge, which shows that LT tour did alot harm on hus vocal Chords.
  2. Random thought and not sure where to ask but... Was there a live version of New Years day that had just the edge playing piano for the intro, can't find it anywhere, if it even exists.

    Here is the audio:

I'm pretty sure that the live version on Experience was based off of the New Year's Dub from 1999. Listen here:

  4. That's awesome! I'm sure Bono would love it - poor guy, first time he's seen with a cigarette in years and they have to remove the post! Cool that he's hanging around with Nick Cave.

They maybe removed it because he was worried about getting a hard time of Ali lol.

  6. Well he can make a puff from his friend who’s holding a fag in his hand

Good point. I find it odd when people talk about his vocals on Lovetown being so great. He was clearly straining and as you said, most likely did some permanent damage.

On a side note- When he lost his voice in Berlin he sounded dry as hell. The flying and the climate controlled environment is pretty awful for your vocal cords as well.

  8. I hope you have nothing against black roses
