I love it when Bono is howling like this!
One can only wish there will be lots of howling on the new U2 album, when it finally comes out in 2014.

I don't like it (I mean, at all), but I've got to say his voice is very powerful here.

It doesn't sound like Bono's actual voice. It sounds more like his voice was back in the 80's.

According to U2byU2, Bono started smoking heavily in 86 or 87, before the JT tour.

He had the ability to sound like that before that, but did it a lot more when he started really smoking.

I think it could be recent, he's using his old incorrect, technique that damaged his voice. He's done that a few times lately.
