  4. According to U2byU2, Bono started smoking heavily in 86 or 87, before the JT tour.

    He had the ability to sound like that before that, but did it a lot more when he started really smoking.
  6. I think it could be recent, he's using his old incorrect, technique that damaged his voice. He's done that a few times lately.
