  1. According to U2byU2, Bono started smoking heavily in 86 or 87, before the JT tour.

    He had the ability to sound like that before that, but did it a lot more when he started really smoking.

    His old way of singing didn't "damage" his voice, it was his smoking and that throat cancer scare and subsequent operation back in the late 90s/early 2000s that did.
