    His old way of singing didn't "damage" his voice, it was his smoking and that throat cancer scare and subsequent operation back in the late 90s/early 2000s that did.

    Oh, yes it did. Screaming and straining like that will damage your voice whether you smoke or not.


  4. That's true if he howled like that on every U2 song back then, but he didn't. Bono strained his voice on only a few songs. The smoking/throat cancer thing had way more impact, and I believe he said as much at some point in the early 2000s to explain his vocal issues.

    He had a lot of vocal issues back then, cancelled shows... He's a lot more consistent, technique does a big difference. Singing without straining or screaming with good technique can hurt your voice as well.

    He's always been awesome though, even when his voice was weak. The thing that makes Bono is the passion and all the others emotions that he sings into your ear like noone else can.
