It's probably just a "let's see if there's anything kicking around right now" type thing. Then again, I do remember right after the tour ended, I think Adam or Edge said they'd be in the studio in the fall (so last September-November) working on some new stuff. Maybe they decided that that would be their break, and now they're back in there.
