  1. I don't think it will be leftovers as we know it, but more like templates of what's to come. Kind of how like COBL started during Pop, or Send His Angels during Zooropa. I hope we do get proper album versions of Breaking Wave and North Star and the rest being new tracks.

    That's the thing I don't get. Of course they want to be the best and at the top of the charts. I think if you don't at least strive for that then go back to your garage, stop recording and just sing your songs to yourself.

    The thing is when they released an album like Passengers they weren't expecting it to shoot through the roof, yet people see that album has U2 being experimental and really out there, and I think a lot of fans would be happy to see them do something like that again.

    I don't really take issue with any band wanting to release music that isn't made to soar to the top. Do you think every genre besides pop/rock think their music is going to go to number 1 and be played on the radio? Death metal, Christian rock, emo, bands like Sigur Ros etc.. There's plenty of music out there that is made not to be number 1 but to be what it is, something that isn't made for mass consumption but rather something the artist is proud of and that they believe a select few would enjoy.

    I'm always reminded of a certain part in U2byU2 when this conversation comes up. It's when they're talking about making Achtung Baby, and there's a part where Larry says something along the lines of "we knew it was risky, but it was a record we were damn proud of and we didn't care if it was our last. If this was the end of U2, so be it, we went out doing something we thought was great". I think people want U2 to go back to that mentality, make something out of left field and not what everyone expects of them. Can you blame them? Their best work has been made under that pretense.
    War - U2 had one more shot to make a big wave so they went political, Edge threw away the echo guitar
    UF - They wanted to change up their sound for artistic integrity
    Joshua Tree - Perhaps not out of left-field, but definitely not of its time

    Point is, the last two albums have been "what people expect from U2." It's almost like they're still scarred from what happened with Pop, when in actuality I don't think they should've been scarred at all. I realize U2 has always been a band about being the biggest and having the most fans, but in terms of music as an art form there's nothing wrong with releasing something that not everyone will like. I think they care too much of what everyone will think of them, hence the "relevant" thing. I'd love for them to stop caring about that and start writing more songs like Fez-Being Born or Cedars of Lebanon. Take those new directions and make energetic songs out of them. They've done it before, and I don't buy into this whole "they're not the same band anymore" argument anyway. They're still the same guys and they know what they're up against, they're up against their own back catalogue, and Bono is the first one to admit it.

    Also, I don't really see how Bomb and NLOTH are "what people would expect" from U2. NLOTH was not what people expected from U2, which is why the general consensus is that it was not a very strong album. If you ask me, another AB or JT is something that people would expect from U2 (as unreasonable of an expectation that is).

Let's keep in mind that these words don't come from Larry himself (yet) but from a radio worker that heard it while the interview was being recorded; the interview itself will be aired on Saturday - let's see what it delivers to us. I think there'll be more insight than just "new album in September".

    that's the mentality that took so maaaannnyyy crap hardly to be called "music" airing everywhere

    all i wish is U2 to be back the Artists they used to .. and not showgirls .. i have a little alarm about that

  12. This may sound as complete bullshit, but think of it for a second.

    U2 albums are never released in summer. Album were released in February (2), March (2), October (5) or November (3 studio + 3 compilation). Only exception is Zooropa (July 1993) , but that one was released during a tour and no-one does an arena tour during winter.

    So why change? A better question would be 'Why always the darker months?'. I think U2 songs are more suitable for the radio during these months. During summer, the big public wants easy music with Spanish lyrics no-one but Sergio understands.

    That said, I think U2 is pretty confident they can be relevant this time. A big hit single may be coming up. Not sure if that's a good thing, though.
