    Mullen reveals new U2 album details

    In an interview with RTÉ 2fm's Dave Fanning, Larry Mullen revealed that U2 are hoping to "have something released by September".

    Speaking about U2's first album since No Line on the Horizon four years ago, he said: "I'd say we will be finished by the summer - and hopefully we will have something released by September.

    "Hopefully what we will be able to do is release September this year and shortly afterwards, release again. That's what we want to do.

    "We are working with [producer] Brian Barton at the moment of Dangermouse, no will.i.am is not there, just Mister Mouse!

    "We have been working for the last couple of years mostly in Ireland which has been great, we have been here for a long period of time. There's lots of music which is great."

    Mullen also spoke about own personal projects, outside of being the drummer of one of the world's biggest bands: "I have spent 30 years sitting behind something...looking at men's arses!

    "I've enjoyed it and it's been great but I looked at Bono and Edge in particular when he went to Broadway, I kind of felt you know I'm not punching high enough.

    "I need to actually move out of this place and actually do other things, and have different conversations and sit at different tables, because everybody else was, except me."

    Mullen also spoke to Fanning about how he embarked on an acting career. In 2011 he filmed the remake of Man on a Train alongside Donald Sutherland, which will be screened in the IFI tomorrow night, Friday, January 11.

    He said: "I just took the ball and ran with it.

    "I met Donald Sutherland the day before and at 6am the next morning and there we were doing it.

    "Failure wasn't an option."

    On working the legendary actor, Sutherland, he said: "You are standing there and this is the guy from Don't Look [Now], Klute and Mash. I just threw myself into it"

    Mullen will also appear alongside Maria Doyle Kennedy in the new film A Thousand Times Good Night and he also has a wish list of directors he would like to work with: "When I see the Coen Brothers films, and I don't say this in an arrogant way, but I always think I know I could work with these guys, I know they'd get me, they do something that I really like.

    "I'd love to work with Danny Boyle and I'd love to work with Quentin Tarantino but that's a pretty high aspiration but that's what I'd like to do."

  3. Thanks much for the post, Sergio - well-worth reading! I'm glad Larry is moving on, and great to hear about the band's projects. If Larry talks of two albums, it might well mean we'll get at least one in the next 12 months or so. But I'm taking this with so many pinches of salt that you're likely to find a salt mine in my place by the time the album comes out (if it comes out!). I enjoy reading all this stuff, and I'll enjoy reading all the stuff that's to come (and it will come); but I won't actually believe a word of it until I actually hear the material.
  4. I'm actually less skeptical than past experiences might suggest. If all that stuff was coming from Bono would be a much different story, but coming from Larry in an interview with their long term friend Dave... I truly BELIEVE it. Not Believe that it will happen, but believe that they've got a true determination to try. And that's something!

  6. Do you think he meant release something again as in release a single, then another single? Or release a full body of work and then another? I wouldn't mind a whole tour devoted to two new albums actually, as long as they're good
  7. I'm just gonna say that if the band make a dance/club related album I'll be extremely disappointed and I'll find it very hard to stay such a devoted fan to a bunch of sell outs. This may sound harsh, but that's just how I feel on the matter. I mean, a bunch of 50 year olds making a club album? Seriously???
  8. I've given enough 2 cents around here to make me look like a pretentious prick, but here I go again.

    Do you really think U2 would release an album that would be played in clubs? And even so, do you think it would sound that unlike U2? If they ever released what they dubbed a "club" album, it would probably sound even less clubbier than Pop. They probably just mean rhythmic music that has a dance feel rather than a rock song like Breathe.

    Besides that, I really doubt they ever would anyway. I have a feeling Larry and even Edge would have a hard time making a club album when they know it's just something U2 isn't at this stage, at least if we're talking straight dance techno-pop stuff. I have a feeling all of those ideas we heard during the 360 tour were thrown by the wayside once they started seriously working on the album. In terms of actual separate albums that each have a distinctive feel, I think they'll release an album with their best work from the past 2 years that are cohesive enough to make an album.

    Then again, I could be completely wrong and we could be in for the most commercial U2 album yet. That being said, U2 have always been about adopting what's current and making it their own. If you need any reassurance of what I mean, just look at what many consider to be the peak of their career, Achtung Baby.

    I'll reserve judgement until I've heard it... With Achtung Baby they were also bowing a bit for the changes in the musical world.
  10. I like most genres. I enjoy listening to Skrillex' Bangarang just as much as to Dave Brubeck. I don't have high standards, but I know U2 have high standards. No matter what kind of album they release, I will probably like it.

    Dance music is overrated.

    Trip-hop is not.


    But you never know, they might surprise us. With relation to Achtung Baby - it's got a more industrial-style to it and had to adapt to the changes. They didn't have to, in all reality, but to stay relevant (and after how R&H was received) it was important for them.
  12. it depends on what TYPE of dance music... if Guetta is still attached to the project then NO THANK YOU. if Above & Beyond got to remix or work with U2 NOW THAT WOULD BE FUCKING AMAZING



    I'd take this over Guetta ANY DAY
