The "real" fans are gonna love anything this band releases so let's make the ones that wait the four years between albums happy and start making music again.

I'm gonna go with Drew and disagree with you here, I have high hopes for their next album and I don't think everything they release is amazing. Those aren't "real" fans you're describing, those are "fanboys", people who are so in love with a band they can't even think critically about them like they should be able to.
  2. that's it

even if one (like me) can be so in love with the band and still think even more critically about them right for that
  3. Sorry if my message came off a little unclear. What I meant by the statement "real" fans are gonna love anything they put out is that U2 have been so concerned about being relevant and looking the perfect album that we just want to hear some new music. I take the song North Star as an example. When this song was performed in concert during some nights on the 360 Tour the crowd sang it right back to Bono which he credited to the internet. Fans seemed to genuinely like the song so why not release it (and other songs). I am not a fanboy as described by RattleandHum1988 and I can critically think and speak to their work.

Ah, well that makes more sense. I agree that I think right now we'd be happy to hear anything, but whether we're happy with the work is another story!

Yes, indeed. I wasn't fond of the Glastonbury song, for instance. (And I'm not a great fan of Mercy either, for the record!) But I did like other new songs, e.g. Boy Falls, North Star, EBW, and other stuff that at some point leaked via youtube.

I think they've still got the potential to do great work, although I hope they won't get as stressed as they got in 2008/2008. They'll do really great work if they'll have fun while doing it.
  6. Yep. And I have a feeling Danger Mouse is doing a good job shaking it up a bit and getting them out of their comfort zone. Either way, the man knows how to make a hit, just look at his producing record.

  7. I don't think U2 will every visit any part of Asia aside from Japan and here's why. U2 is a political band. For most of their tours, there have been segments intentionally designed to bring out controversial political issues in the countries they have been touring. During Elevation, it was gun violence in the US. I'm pretty sure many gun-toting fans felt very uncomfortable during Bullet The Blue Sky. During Vertigo, it was religious conflicts, again a very sensitive issue. And for 360, it was the conflict between Palestine and Israel. Playing in Russia was a huge risk for the band simply because of the activist presence there. Playing in most of Asia would be even riskier for them, at least for the time being.

Most of Bomb, ATYCLB and most of War is crap. But yes, it would be ideal for the band to put something new out. When was the last time they had a new studio recording out?

Agree with the first statement, disagree with the 2nd. Bomb and ATYCLB are my favorite U2 albums. In my mind, Pop, Zooropa, and October have several songs that I would not consider U2's best.
  8. i was pretty ironic .. you know "relevant" "music" .. selling to the masses and all the other crap that hai nothing to do with Music lead to ...
    gangnam style

    This band is still around.

    The producer was Timbaland.

Just like this 'hip' Tiesto, he saw no need for a rock band to have drums and become devoid of bass and guitar. Because rock surely needs no real instruments, nor does it need any interesting elements.

Sorry, I won't let Duran Duran remain nameless. After a very decent comeback album, Astronaut, they presented the follow up to the label, and the label did not like it. They scrapped the album since the label wanted a more "radio friendly" album, brought in both Timbaland and Justin Timberfake. The album was ok in spots, but not as good as Astronaut. Andy Taylor took the high road and quit. The album is almost no guitar, real drums, and bass. U2 will never do that. They might go overboard on a few songs, reaching for hits, but won't go out like that. I still have hopes that Duran Duran release the album recorded before Red Carpet Massacre, since Andy Taylor's guitar is on that.

Maybe the record label itself has heard some experimental stuff and didn't like it, so told them to go back to the start and record some pop rock instead that the masses will love. How much of the masses loved Crazy Tonight (crap), Magnificent (crap) and Get On Your Boots (awesome)?

Most of Bomb, ATYCLB and most of War is crap. But yes, it would be ideal for the band to put something new out. When was the last time they had a new studio recording out?

    Pleasegone replies:

Wow Drew!! I don't mean to bug ya, but....: A lot on here love Crazy Tonight(Pretend Pop Version Remix), and Boots, and Magnificent. I thought the original Crazy was ok, but a weaker cousin of "Walk On." I pretty much have a reputation for hating the Crazy Remix, which is fine with me, but I loved "Magnificent" as does my best U2 friend. I really like Boots, but it is getting a little stale with me.

I know there are a lot who think Bomb and ATYCLB are crap, but I'm not one of them. I wish they had taken a few more chances, and not tried so hard to sound like U2, but both are filled with great songs, "Wild Honey," "One Step Closer" are not among them

I can't remember anybody calling "War" crap around here. I know it is not everyone's favorite...but I wouldn't call any of their albums crap. "Passengers," is full of songs I hardly ever listen to, but the two singles I really love.
  11. pleasegone, you have a reputation of loving Pop, making you the foil to my greatly disliking Pop.

But in all honesty, U2 has not released an album that one could call "crap" on all accounts. There are always going to be songs on albums that just don't work. In my mind, the only album I can actually listen to all the way through is ATYCLB (Wild Honey is a beautiful song and so is Grace).

NLOTH had a couple songs that I can't stand (up comedy), but that does not discount the fact that it was an amazing album. U2 will continue to produce amazing songs until they find no reason to exist, to keep with Bono's cheesy, yet relevant, theme.
