That's how I see it. Why haven't U2 got their own record distribution system yet where they can actually put out things without the backwards twats over at the record companies and 'so-called producers' deciding their opinion on it, causing the album to be safe and pleasing for the American pop market.
I think it is U2 to blame, from all bands they probably are one of the few with most freedom.
Personally I think that this process is not working for them anymore. As you say, I dont believe songs will actually improve by changing and changing them over time. Maybe it would be 'fun' for them to just set a hard deadline and make the best of it.
