  1. Would have you believe my girl is a big U2 fan and wants me to go to a U2 gig. I've never been, so am really keen on what i've heard.
    Always liked U2 just never got around to going to a show, so we will buy
    rail tickets once the're out touring.
    My guess by the looks of things it will be summer, neat!
    Im really a Pearl Jam fan myself, she loves U2, well it could be worse, it could be Coldplay or something, not that they are that tragic.

  2. U2 shows are some of the greatest shows you can go to. Not just saying that because they are a great band, but seriously - something you don't feel with many other bands happens only at a U2 show.

    As for HTDAAB and ATYCLB:

    - Wild Honey
    - Peace On Earth
    - When I Look At The World
    - Miracle Drug
    - City Of Blinding Lights (best for walking in a foreign city at night)
    - A Man And A Woman
    - Crumbs From Your Table
    - One Step Closer
    - Original Of The Species
    - Yahweh

    ...are the only songs from both that I can listen to without feeling bored. I understand where they had to go in direction resulting from the 'poor' response to Pop (if an album I made sold seven million copies I'd be pleased - I'd be shocked if anyone bought it) but at the same time, they became utterly safe.

    So if they have to go back to a straight-up pop-rock sound for this new record, it'll be understandable but not desirable to me. But then again, a good song is a good song. I even like Stand Up (despite the cheesy-ass lyrics).

    Songs I love from HTDAAB

    And these are almost all album versions that I like. The only substitutions I would make are Elevation (album swapped with Single Version) and Walk On (again, album swapped for Single Version). In fact, I'll go as far as to say that ATYCLB is the only U2 album I can listen to in full (as in preserving the original tracklist and so on).

    I'm going to be honest and say that I can't actually relate with many songs from the pre-ATYCLB era. The only ones are their obvious anthems, Streets, WOWY, Running To Stand Still, etc.

    Regarding the sound, I will say that HTDAAB is probably the closest they've gotten to a "rock sound," as in that album is the closest to what I believe a rock album would sound like.

    I also think people who believe ATYCLB and HTDAAB sound like pop-rock are misunderstood as to what pop-rock sounds like. Pop-rock is basically 85% pop, 25% rock. I can't think of any good examples of Pop-rock because there really aren't any. Like if you go to somebody who listens to pop-rock and say that ATYCLB and HTDAAB are full of pop-rock songs, they will look at you like you're crazy.

    If you're saying that pop-rock is basically pop, you're absolutely right, because that's what the standards appear to be at this point.

    Disregarding my shameless attempt to fix my typo, the gist is still the same. Pop-rock is essentially far more pop than rock. If our fear is that U2 will suddenly make a beeline towards pop, we need not worry because that will never happen.

    I'd say that Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto came close, but only in the sense that their album contained very good rock songs and one very good pop song (I consider Princess of China a pop song).
  8. If you mean that Coldplay does play softrock you´re right. Coldplay did never compose rocksongs like Pride.. U2 is a rockband. Coldplay not,
    Anaothe example: Is One a rocksong or a popsong. Does it matter? It´s a great song.

    I do hope that the new U2 album has great rocksongs as before.

    The closest thing to decent pop-rock is Maroon 5? I'm glad you said their early stuff (even though the singer sounds like he's swallowed a laxative) because their new 'music' is just noise. Much like a lot of new 'music'.

    The last pop-rock album I heard was Havoc And Bright Lights from 2012. The new Kesha-Iggy collaboration was pretty pop-rock. That's about all the new music I know in that type of category.

    U2 did make a beeline towards pop-rock quite recently. There were four PR-sounding type songs on NLOTH - Magnificent, Stand Up, Get On Your Boots and Crazy Tonight (more so). As for that new Coldplay album - meh. I did not enjoy that album - at least the Viva La Vida one sounded great (because of the classical / symphonic elements). Not one song happened to pull me in whatsoever.

    Recommend me a good pop-rock album, or generally something new that's good.

    Tell this to people who listen to pop rock and they will tell you that you are crazy. To say that Boots was PR-sounding is like saying that Vertigo is PR sounding. Ridiculous.
  12. I think pop-rock is much cheaper and more disposable than anything U2 have put out. There's still a large scope for good music between rock and pop-rock.
