On the other hand, which bands (similair to U2) are using Twitter themselves? I don't see a Chris Martin, Eddie Vedder, Bruce Springsteen, Alex Turner on Twitter.
They are on Twitter with their band but none of them are updating themself. Same goes for Facebook.

Pearl Jam are pretty active on Twitter and nice to follow, but I think the fact that they have something to promote (New album) is the main reason for that.

The fact that U2.com sucks is something I can't deny

Chris does regular updates on his own on the CP twitter account. Same goes for Turner and Bruce. Of course Muse as well, both as a band and in all their personal accounts. But anyway, even if it isn't themselves doing it, the simple fact of having an OFFICIAL U2 account would be more than what we have: a lame @u2com thing and a forgotten Edge account that never got to interact or post anything interesting besides some great and some dumb photos. It's just so lame that they don't realize the power of the social networking.

Lady gaga has 40 million followers on Twitter ( @ladygaga ). I am not one of them, but I bet her new album sells well! Kiss the future boys, embrace the future, be excited by the future. Its the year 2013 not 1993!

This seems odd to me coming from a band who is in a league of their own when it comes to tours. I also remember reading in "U2 at the End of the World" that when they went to negotiate a new record deal they wanted to secure their rights to any digital music sales...and this was the early 90's!

Yeah, they were fine back then. They also did lots of interesting stuff with Internet during the POP era, including an advanced website, some webcasts and online interviews and Q&A, etc. Then came ATYCLB and they still had a good sense of what was relevant in the technology world. Then came the iPod and their highest peak of popularity for the masses since Zoo TV.

I think they lost track of it around 2006-8, when social network (specially Facebook, then Twitter from 2008 on) started to develop and be prominent in relationships between bands, tour agencies, venues, management offices and fans. In fact, the whole internet behaviour changed, with information-sharing changing from small forums, mail groups, webrings and stuff to huge, centralized sites like FB and Twitter. They lost the train, but are able to pick it up again I think.
